An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming days…
Highlights
1. Coolish weather for the first part of the week.
2. Slow warming trend each day
3. Dry and dry.
4. No significant rain into October? Maybe.
5. Could a tropical system help us out towards the end of the month?
Well, this is certainly nice weather. Temperature wise, at least. But, boy is it ever dry. At least for most.
I do not have good news on the rain front. I don’t see any significant storm systems through the rest of September. Granted that is a long range forecast. But, the charts indicate calm weather will continue for awhile.
Obviously this is bad news for those who need rain. And, it is also bad news for the upcoming fire season.
I know some farmers, on the other hand, could use some dry weather. We just don’t want it to last too long.
The real question is what happens in October? Are we going to see a continuation of this pattern? Or, will the jet stream finally start to shift southward. We typically see winds kick up in October and November. That combined with low humidity could cause some issues. I am sure local fire departments would like to see some moisture put back into the ground.
Still a bit early to make a hard call on the October forecast. September was easier. Right now I see quite a few (perhaps even a lot) above normal temperature days for October. But, there is at least one decent cold shot showing up in the charts, as well.
The dry spell might be difficult to break. Yes, we could always have a tropical system push into the region from the southwest of south. That is still a possibility. Historically those type of events can bring soaking rains to the region. But, that is a long shot at this point.
October may favor drier than normal weather. And, if late SEPT and OCT end up dry then there is a 60% chance for drought this winter. Let’s hope for rain.
The good news is that I don’t see any severe weather threats over the coming 7-10 days. I suppose we can be thankful for that.

I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s. I have 37 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns. My degree is in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University and an Associate of Science (AS). I am currently working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Geoscience. Just need to finish two Spanish classes!
I am a member of the American Meteorological Society. I am a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador. And, I am the former Meteorologist for McCracken County Emergency Management. I served them proudly for ten years before expanding my job role to additional counties in western Kentucky.
I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.
There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
I am a recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross. In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award. I was recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.
