beausanalysis

An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day

Analysis

Friday night
Confidence: High

Light snow fell over parts of the region on Thursday night.  I had snow in the forecast, but did not think it would stick to the ground.  Ground temperatures are around 50 degrees.  It managed to coat some areas.  No travel problems.

and morning

Friday night:

Calm weather.  Perhaps some fog developing.  If fog were to develop then patchy dense fog possible.  It will be on the cool side, but nothing out of the ordinary.  Lows tonight will range from 28 to 34 degrees.

Saturday and Saturday night
Confidence: High

Calm weather for Saturday.  Nice.  You can expect quite a bit of sunshine.  Temperatures should pop into the upper 50’s and perhaps lower 60’s.  A few passing clouds.  No precipitation anticipated.

Some increase in clouds will be possible Saturday night.

Check out the dew points on Saturday.  Dry atmosphere.

Sunday and Sunday night
Confidence: Medium

Clouds will begin to increase on Sunday.  Warmer air will pull northward from the Gulf of Mexico and an increase in dew points, as well.

I can’t completely rule out a brief passing shower on Sunday afternoon, but it really appears the rain will hold off until Sunday night into Monday.  If showers do develop they would be light.

I would not cancel any plans on Sunday.  It should be a decent day.  Clouds will increase, as mentioned above.

Winds will gust to 20 mph on Sunday and 25 mph Sunday night.  Winds will increase Sunday night and Monday.

Rain chances will increase Sunday night.  I doubt widespread rain arrives until Monday and Tuesday.  Plan on some showers Sunday night (esp late).

Small risk for lightning Sunday night.  I think the lightning risk increases Monday and Tuesday.

Monday into Tuesday
Confidence: Medium

Breezy weather develops Sunday night into Monday night.  I would not be surprised if winds gusted into the 30 to 40 mph range on Monday and Monday afternoon.  Strong southerly winds will pull the warmer air northward.  Higher dew points, as well.  This combination will help set the stage for increasing shower and thunderstorm chances.

The severe weather threat is not zero, but does not appear great.  At least not at this time.  I will keep an eye on it.  Wind fields will be strong.  Wind shear will be strong, as well.  The question will be dew points and instability.

If dew points were higher, I would be a bit more concerned.  Still several days away.

Here is the wind gust map for Monday morning.  Winds will be gusty because of the pressure gradient.  Tight pressure gradient equals gusty winds.

Dew points  will be on the rise.  Look back at Saturday’s dew points (above) and compare to these.  The area of low pressure pulls air upward from the Gulf of Mexico, thus, an increase in dew points (moisture).

Normally dew points of 58 and above get my attention (when it comes to thunderstorms)

Here is the GFS precipitation may for Monday into Tuesday

12 PM Monday

This next map is for 6 PM on Monday

This next map is for 12 AM on Tuesday

I can’t rule out some locally heavy downpours.  Let’s keep an eye on it.

Severe thunderstorm outlook.

Remember that a severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that produces 58 mph winds or higher, quarter size hail or larger, and/or a tornado.

Friday night through Sunday night:  Severe weather is not anticipated.  Perhaps a risk of lightning after 1 am Monday morning

Monday and Tuesday:  A cold front will approach from the west.  Thunderstorms are possible.  Wind shear will be high.  Instability may be lacking.  Thunderstorms are possible.  The risk for severe weather is not zero.  Monitor updates.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not update then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.

During the winter you can track snow and ice by clicking the winterize button on the local city view interactive radars.

I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and this blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on some television stations or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
