An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming days…

Highlights

1.  Mostly calm weather to continue
2.  Weak system arrives Sunday night with a small chance for showers
3.  I am watching a potential rain maker for the end of the new work week
3.  Much more active weather pattern showing up in the long range charts

Well, I have to say that December is off to a rather slow start when it comes to weather.  Some of you have been asking me about snow.  Some of you have been telling me you hope it doesn’t snow all winter.  I suppose we have two camps forming.

No snow in my forecast over the coming six days.

We do have a weak disturbance moving into the region on Sunday night and Monday morning.  The system will start to spread clouds into our region over the next 12-24 hours.

Clouds will increase on Sunday into Sunday evening.  A few sprinkles or light showers will  be possible on Sunday night/Monday morning.  But, don’t expect much.  A few spots could pick up a trace to maybe a tenth of an inch of rainfall.  And, if this occurs at night you might not even know it rained.

Calm weather is expected Monday through Thursday.  Another weak system may increase clouds on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

I am watching a stronger storm system for Friday/Saturday/Sunday into the upcoming weekend.  That system could bring a round of showers and thunderstorms.  We will need to monitor for some strong storms.  A bit early to know about that.

We may have a more active weather pattern the last two weeks of the month.  Models are showing several potential storm systems.  Long range models are a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to accuracy.  That means low confidence on them being correct.  The GFS is showing some significant precipitation events.

Whether one of those systems might produce frozen precipitation will need to be monitored.   I suppose the weatherman should enjoy the calm before the storms.

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?

I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s.  I have 37 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns.  My degree is in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University and an Associate of Science (AS).  I am currently working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Geoscience.

My resume includes:

Member of the American Meteorological Society.

NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.

Meteorologist for McCracken County Emergency Management.

I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.

Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross

In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.

Recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.

I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
