Thursday to Thursday

1.  Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.   Lightning is possible today and tonight ahead of a cold front.  I am monitoring next Tuesday into Thursday.

2.  Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  No.

We will have daily shower/thunderstorm chances into Thursday.  I can’t rule out a few reports of wind damage.  Overall, the risk appears lower-end.  I will monitor each day in case adjustments are necessary.

* The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater,  1″ hail or larger,  and/or tornadoes

3.  Is flash flooding in the forecast? No.

4.  Will there be a chance of a frost or freeze?  No.

5.  Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees?  No.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map.  Just ignore that.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Rain coming to an end.
    2.   Cooler weather.
    3.   Nice weekend ahead.

.

We still have a few showers around the area this morning.  Overall, the coverage is decreasing and our rain event is beginning to come to an end.

We will have a chance of a few showers and thunderstorms today.  Coverage will not be anything like recent days.

A strong cold front will push across the region today.  A few showers/storms will form along it.  If we have some sunshine today then that would increase the thunderstorm chances just a tad.  Perhaps a small line ahead of the cold front.  Not expecting anything major.

Highs today will be in the mid to upper 80s.  Clouds will be slow to thin in some areas.

The cold front will finally bring our rain chances to an end tonight.

Plan on dry conditions Friday into Sunday.  I will keep an eye on the Hopkinsville area Friday afternoon for a shower.  For now, that appears unlikely.

Expect highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and lows in the upper 50s to middle 60s over the coming days.

Our next cold front will arrive Monday night into Tuesday.  For now, rain chances should remain to our north through Monday afternoon and evening.

If the front moves into the region Tuesday into Wednesday then rain chances will increase.  That is still, however, a big question mark.

Data is mixed on how far south the cold front will push.  If it remains out of our region then we will remain dry.

This is the part of the forecast that will need monitoring.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models.  Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather.  All models are wrong.  Some are more wrong than others.  Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation.  If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
