An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming days…
- Some showers
- Warmer weekend
- Warm next week, but with shower and thunderstorm chances.
The main story for the next 12-24 hours will be rain chances. A system approaching from our southwest will spread showers into the region late Thursday night into Friday. Rainfall totals are not anticipated to be very high. Most areas will pick up less than 0.25″. At one time this appeared to be a heavy rain event. But, with each passing day the numbers have trended less and less.
This event is more centered over the southern half of the region vs the northern half. That means that areas from Poplar Bluff towards the Land Between the Lakes will have more precipitation than say Farmington, Missouri towards Mt Vernon.
If there were to be heavier rain totals then it would likely be over our southeastern counties. That would include areas like Murry, Kentucky eastward.
A rumble of thunder can’t be ruled out. But, severe weather is not anticipated.
We will dry out on Friday night. And, Saturday and Sunday appear dry. Milder weekend, as well. Expect temperatures into the 70s both Saturday and Sunday. Cool morning lows into the 50s.
There could be some clouds from time to time this weekend. Overall, a decent weekend on tap for the region.
Warmer weather will be with us through most of next week. I suspect widespread 70s and even some 80s from Monday into Friday. The one fly in the ointment would be cloud cover. Some of the days next week will deliver showers and thunderstorms. Typical for a warmer air mass. Instability will be higher next week. That means that some storms could be strong. The exact placement of showers and thunderstorms next week will need to be fine tuned. Monitor updates. There will be a number of disturbances moving through the jet stream flow.
Monitor the day by day details as they are updated. I will continue to update the probability numbers.
Radar
We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not seem to be updating then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.
If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?
I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s. I have 37 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns. My degree is in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University and an Associate of Science (AS). I am currently working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Geoscience.
My resume includes:
Member of the American Meteorological Society.
NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.
Meteorologist for McCracken County Emergency Management. I served from 2005 through 2015.
I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.
Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross.
In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.
Recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.
I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
