The Beau Dodson Weather APP is ready for Apple and Android users.  The purpose of this APP is for me to deliver your text messages instantly.  ATT and Verizon have not always been reliable when it comes to speed.  The APP allows instant delivery.

Some of you have asked if you can keep receiving the texts on your phone and the app.  The answer to that is, yes.  The Android app will automatically allow that to happen.  On the Apple app, however, you will need to go into your app and click settings.  Make sure the green tab is OFF.  Off means you will still receive the texts to your phone and the app.  If you have any questions, then email me at beaudodson@usawx.com

The APP is for text subscribers.

The direct download, for the Apple app, can be viewed here

An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day

Analysis

Tuesday night into Thursday
Confidence: High

Brief today.  I was up all night tracking the severe weather.

There were a few reports of down trees.  The most intense damage was in Wickliffe, Kentucky.

A possible QLCS tornado hit Wickliffe, KY.  Radar clearly shows a couplet.  A couplet is rotation.  Here are the radar images.

QLCS tornadoes are short lived tornadoes.  They can be 10 feet wide to several hundred feet wide.  They can last for seconds to minutes.  Short lived and VERY hard to warn on.

I had QLCS tornadoes in the forecast last night.  I never know where they might occur, but I know the conditions that produce them.

You can see the hook echo and then the green/red couplet.

and

The good news is that calm weather is anticipated for Tuesday night into Thursday morning.  Mild temperatures.  Above normal temperatures.

Highs on Wednesday and Thursday will top out in the middle to upper 60’s.  Someone could hit 70 degrees on Thursday  Amazing.

Clouds should increase Thursday afternoon.  Another weak system will pass through the area on Thursday night.  Some showers and perhaps thunderstorms will be possible with the system.  Not anticipating any severe weather or heavy rain.

Here is what the NAM is showing for Thursday evening and Thursday night.  Future-cast radar.  What radar might look like.

6 PM Thursday.  Green represents rain showers.

This next image is for 9 PM on Thursday

This next image is for 12 AM on Friday morning.  Rain should exit before Friday morning sunrise

A much stronger system could impact the region this weekend.

Weekend system:
Very low confidence

A winter storm is forecast to develop on Saturday and Saturday night.  The question is track.  If the low tracks far enough south then portions of our region could experience heavy wet snow and sleet.  Thunderstorms are possible to the south and east of the area of low pressure.

It is still too early to know what track the system will take.

Let’s hope we do not have snow.  If snow falls then a hard freeze will follow on Saturday and Sunday night.  Areas that experience snow could have temperatures in the 18 to 25 degree range.  This would cause problems for fruit trees that have already bloomed.  We do not want this snow event.

Monitor updates.  I am sure the forecast will need adjusting moving forward.

I am concerned about cold weather, as well.  If snow falls then temperatures in the 20’s will occur.  We could linger in the 20’s for 24 hours.  That would not be good news for fruit trees.

If the snow does not fall, then temperatures might still fall below freezing.

I will have a lot more to say on Wednesday, about the weekend system

Stay tuned

No major concerns Tuesday night through Thursday.

I am monitoring a late season winter storm for the weekend.  If you have travel plans in the Missouri and/or Ohio Valley then monitor updates.  Heavy snow is likely to occur north of the area of low pressure.  Questions remain on the track.  Thus, monitor updates.

Severe thunderstorm outlook.

Remember that a severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that produces 58 mph winds or higher, quarter size hail or larger, and/or a tornado.

Tuesday night through Friday night:  Some lightning possible Thursday night.  I am closely monitoring another system for Saturday.  The Saturday system could produce strong thunderstorms to the south and east of the area of low pressure.  The question is, where does the low track.  Monitor updates

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not update then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.

During the winter you can track snow and ice by clicking the winterize button on the local city view interactive radars.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and this blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on some television stations or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
