7-day forecast for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.

This is a blend for the region.  See the detailed region by region forecast further down in this post.

Friday through Friday

1.  Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.  Lightning is possible Friday and Friday night.  Isolated lightning is possible Saturday.   I am monitoring next Monday through Wednesday as a cold front approaches.  I am closely watching the Gulf of Mexico tropical storm, as well.

2.  Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  Monitor.   A few of Friday’s thunderstorms could produce gusty wind and small hail.  Then, I will be keeping an eye on the tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico.  It will push northward over the coming days into next week.  Occasionally, these systems can deliver severe weather into our region.  A bit early to know the track.

* The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater,  1″ hail or larger,  and/or tornadoes

3.  Is flash flooding in the forecast?  Possible.  Tropical Storm Christobal will push northward Monday into Wednesday.  This could bring heavy rain to our local area.

4.  Will there be a chance of a frost or freeze?  No.

5.  Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees?  No.

6.  Will the wet-bulb globe temperature reach danger levels? No.  We will, however, reach marginal levels.

.
Friday WBGT (F): 83°  Marginal.  If working outside, then take 15-minute breaks each hour.
Saturday WBGT (F): 84°  Marginal.  If working outside, then take 15-minute breaks each hour.
Sunday WBGT (F): 84° Marginal.  If working outside, then take 15-minute breaks each hour.
Tuesday WBGT (F): N/A° No concerns.
Wednesday WBGT (F): N/A° No concerns.

.

The WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a measure of the heat stress in direct sunlight, which takes into account: temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover (solar radiation).

This differs from the heat index, which takes into consideration temperature and humidity and is calculated for shady areas.

If you work or exercise in direct sunlight, this is a good element to monitor.

Sports coaches, schools, military agencies, OSHA, and many nations use the WBGT as a guide to managing workload in direct sunlight.

Today through June 10th.  A few thunderstorms will be possible Friday and Friday night.  The most intense storms will produce gusty wind and small hail.  Lightning and heavy downpours, of course.

I am keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Christobal (currently moving into the Gulf of Mexico).  It may bring rain to our region next week.  Occasionally, land-falling tropical systems can produce short-lived tornadoes.  Monitor updates moving forward.

Monitor your Beau Dodson Weather app.   Make sure you are logged in.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map.  Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather advice:

Updated June 5, 2020

Monitor the heat index today into the weekend.

I am monitoring next Monday night into Wednesday. A tropical storm will push out of the Gulf of Mexico and move inland.  This will likely bring some rain to our region.  As always, tropical systems can produce short-lived tornadoes.  Monitor updates.

Download the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app from the app store.  Search for Weather Talk by the Fire Horn.  Download it.  Install it.  It is for subscribers.  Not a subscriber?  Go to www.weathertalk.com/welcome

Weather Discussion

    1.   Hot temperatures
    2.   Some thunderstorms
    3.   Monitor the tropics for a possible rain event in our region next week.

We will have a chance of scattered thunderstorms again today (Friday).  The activity will wane this evening/overnight.  Leaving just a fe widely scattered storms.

Saturday is likely to be dry across most of the area.  An isolated thunderstorm will be possible.

Hot and muggy weather will be the general rule with highs through Sunday in the upper 80s to lower 90s.  Overnight lows in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.

Again, heat index values will be higher.  You will want to hydrate.  As always, use common sense and know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

In addition to the above, I am monitoring Tropical Storm Cristobal in the Gulf of Mexico.  The track of that will be key to where a path of heavy rain occurs.

.

You can clearly see the path on the EC model.  The GFS is further south and east.

And the GFS model rainfall forecast.

Here is the EC animation.  Tropical systems are extremely difficult to forecast in the long-range.  Thus, there will likely be adjustments.  Perhaps dramatic adjustments.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models.  Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather.  All models are wrong.  Some are more wrong than others.  Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation.  If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
