7-day forecast for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.

This is a blend for the region.  See the detailed region by region forecast further down in this post.

.

.

.
Monday through Monday

1.  Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.   Summer heat and summer thunderstorms will be with us all week.  Lightning will be a concern.  It appears the main concern will be afternoon and evening thunderstorms.  I call those heat of the day storms.  Chances will decrease overnight But won’t be a zero risk).

2.  Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  Low risk.   The main concern will be down burst wind.  Thunderstorms, during the summer months, can grow to 40,000 to 55,000′.  When they weaken they can collapse.  This causes high winds.  Winds can exceed 50 mph.

* The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater,  1″ hail or larger,  and/or tornadoes

3.  Is flash flooding in the forecast? Possible.  Slow moving storms will produce heavy rain.  The rain will not be as widespread as recent days.  That is the good news.

4.  Will there be a chance of a frost or freeze?  No.

5.  Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees?  Possible.  All of the moisture in the ground and air will make it feel quite muggy.  Heat index values may approach 100.

6.  Will the wet-bulb globe temperature reach caution or danger levels?  Yes.

Monday WBGT (F): 84° Take 15 to 20 minute breaks each hour of working or exercising in direct sunlight.
Tuesday WBGT (F): 85° Take 20 to 30 minute breaks each hour of working or exercising in direct sunlight.
Wednesday WBGT (F): 84° Take 15 to 20 minute breaks each hour of working or exercising in direct sunlight.
Thursday WBGT (F): 83° Take 15 minute breaks each hour of working or exercising in direct sunlight.
Friday WBGT (F): 83° Take 15 minute breaks each hour of working or exercising in direct sunlight.
Saturday WBGT (F): 83° Take 15 minute breaks each hour of working or exercising in direct sunlight.
Sunday WBGT (F): 83° Take 15 minute breaks each hour of working or exercising in direct sunlight.

.

The WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a measure of the heat stress in direct sunlight, which takes into account: temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover (solar radiation).

This differs from the heat index, which takes into consideration temperature and humidity and is calculated for shady areas.

If you work or exercise in direct sunlight, this is a good element to monitor.

Sports coaches, schools, military agencies, OSHA, and many nations use the WBGT as a guide to managing workload in direct sunlight.

Today through July 13th:   We will have a daily chance of showers and thunderstorms.  Typical summer weather.  Thunderstorms can produce heavy rain, lightning, and gusty wind.  Small hail, as well.  I can’t rule out down burst winds.  Those are usually isolated.  They can bring down some tree limbs with wind gusts above 50 mph.

Organized severe weather is unlikely.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map.  Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather advice:

Updated July 6, 2020

Isolated thunderstorms over the coming days will produce downpours, gusty wind, and lightning.

Heat index values today through Sunday will rise into the 94 to 98 degree range.  Muggy weather.  Use care, as always.

Weather Discussion

    1.  Hot and muggy weather.  Summer!
    2.  A few thunderstorms will be possible into the upcoming weekend.
    3.  Widespread rain and storms currently appears unlikely.  I will keep a close eye on the daily details in case a large storm complex develops.

I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend.  It was a bit hot.  Summer!  Muggy, as well.  Dew points have been in the upper 60s to middle 70s.  Occasionally higher.  That is air that you wear.  You walk outside and sweat.

We did have quite a bit of rain last week.  This will end the drought across portions of the region.  At least for now.  Flash drought is still a concern over the coming months.

A flash drought it a short-term drought.  It develops after a short period of time with little or no rain.  Flash droughts are no uncommon.

Let’s take a look at the seven day rain totals from June 26th through July 3rd.

Check out these crazy numbers.  We had more than one location report more than TEN inches of rain.  Yes, ten inches!  Incredible rain totals.

Most of that fell in a short amount of time, as well.

Here are the radar estimated totals from last week.  Impressive, to say the least.

.

It is not uncommon to have extreme rain totals during the month of June.  We typically have at least one event each year that produces pockets of heavy rain.

This is mainly because of the amount of moisture in the atmosphere during the summer months.  When the atmosphere is loaded with moisture you can pick up one to three inches of rain in an hour.  This leads to flash flooding.

The coming days will bring scattered thunderstorm chances.  At this time, organized thunderstorms appear unlikely.  We are more likely to see heat of the day popup thunderstorm activity.

That means hot and muggy conditions each day.  Then, a few thunderstorms will bubble up during the peak heating of the day.  They will then weaken and likely die off each night.

At any given point, during the day and night, over the coming days we will have a least a small chance of thunderstorms.  Peak activity being between 12 pm and 8 pm.

Lightning will be a concern for those outdoors.  Summer thunderstorms can produce a prolific amount of lightning.  Head indoors when thunder roars.

The latest July and August temperature and precipitation outlooks have been updated and posted.  Here they are.

Hot and muggy.  We will need to monitor the potential of dry conditions in some of our counties.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models.  Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather.  All models are wrong.  Some are more wrong than others.  Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation.  If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
