An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day

  1.  Calm weather into Friday night
  2.  Weekend rain maker
  3.  Active pattern into next week

Winter weather outlooks will be posted on the www.weathertalk.com website.  Look under the Winter Weather Outlook tab.  These are updated at least twice each week.

The winter weather outlook was updated on Monday, January 30th

If you would like to receive a text notification, when the winter weather outlooks are updated, then make sure you have opted into text option three.  The text options are found under the Personal Notification Settings tab on the weathertalk.com website.

Tuesday night into Friday
Confidence:  High

February is knocking at the door.  The weather will begin on a calm note.  Nothing dramatic.  Temperatures will be near normal to a bit below normal from Thursday into Friday.  Nothing extreme, but on the chilly side.  Highs on both Thursday and Friday will likely remain in the 30’s to lower 40’s.

I can’t rule out some patchy fog over the coming nights.  Keep that in mind.Temperatures will be near normal to a bit below normal from Thursday into Friday.  Nothing extreme, but on the chilly side.  Highs on both Thursday and Friday will likely remain in the 30’s to lower 40’s.

Temperatures will be near normal to a bit below normal from Thursday into Friday.  Nothing extreme, but on the chilly side.  Highs on both Thursday and Friday will likely remain in the 30’s to lower 40’s.

We will have intervals of clouds over the coming days, as well.  We should remain precipitation-free through Friday night.

Saturday and Sunday
Confidence:  Medium to high

Our next rain maker will spread clouds into the region on Friday night and Saturday.  Rain showers may develop as early as Saturday, but more likely Saturday evening into Saturday night.

It appears that most of the precipitation will fall as rain.  I can’t completely rule out some wintry mix over the Ozarks.  This will be determined by how fast the precipitation moves in from the southwest.  At this time, it does not look to be anything significant.

Here is the weather map for 6 pm on Saturday.  Rain showers in Missouri.  Wintry mix way up near Peoria.

Here is the map for Sunday at 12 am.

Here is the map for 6 am on Sunday.

Here is the map for 12 pm on Sunday.  Rain ending from west to east.

Monday into Friday (next week)
Confidence:  Low

Active weather is likely next week.  This could mean thunderstorms.  I would encourage everyone to monitor updates.  Remember, severe weather can occur during the winter months.

Model guidance is indicating at least one or two systems next week.  Both of them could cause issues in our region.

I have been tracking this system for a month.

The models are picking up on a system around the 7th and around the 9th.  That seems a bit complicated.  Normally you have a bit more space in between systems.  Let’s monitor trends.  It could be that the models are not handling the pattern.  It is possible this is one large storm system.  Still early to know for sure.

Here is what the GFS model is showing for Tuesday, February 7th.  Remember, I have been watching the 7th through 10th/11th time frame.  It has always been a matter of nailing the date.  Models are now showing a big system during that time frame.

This track would bring heavy storms into our region.  Still some time to monitor the track and intensity of this one.

The GFS takes the low into northern Illinois.  Cold front trails into Arkansas and Louisiana.

The Canadian model guidance is showing something similar

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not update then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.

During the winter you can track snow and ice by clicking the winterize button on the local city view interactive radars.

If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and this blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on some television stations or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
