Good day, everyone. An active weather pattern over the next seven days.
––> A winter weather advisory has been issued for portions of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois.
The current focus in on the winter weather advisory zone. The rest of us should be mostly rain. I can’t rule out a few more counties being added to the advisory. I am watching Butler, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, and Perry Counties in southeast Missouri. I am watching Jackson, Perry, Franklin, and Jefferson Counties in southern Illinois.

WHAT…Freezing rain expected. Total ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch.
WHERE…Portions of south central, southwest, and west central Illinois and central, east central, northeast, and southeast Missouri. WHEN…From midnight tonight to 6 PM CST Monday.
IMPACTS…Difficult travel conditions are possible. Icy conditions are likely to impact the Monday morning commute and could impact the evening commute as well. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS

Here is the probability of freezing rain. As you can see, it is mainly our western counties in Missouri and southwest Illinois. There remain some questions on when temperatures will rise above freezing with this event. As some point late Monday morning into Monday afternoon temperatures will rise above 32 area-wide.

More information on freezing rain. This graphic is from the St Louis, Missouri NWS.
They have the freezing rain a little farther southeast into our region. There remain questions farther south southeast of the advisory zone. I will be monitoring it.
Worse case there is a few hours of freezing rain and sleet farther southeast. Temperatures would then rise above freezing. Changing everything to plain old rain.
Since surfaces are cold, let’s keep an eye on it.

1. Is lightning in the forecast? YES. Lighting is possible Wednesday and Thursday. I will monitor Saturday.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? NOT AT THIS TIME.
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? MONITOR. Locally moderate to heavy rain is possible this week. A widespread one to three inches. This could lead to standing water, low land flooding, and nuisance flooding in areas that commonly flood during moderate rain events.
4. Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees? NO.
5. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? NO.
6. Is measurable snow and/or sleet in the forecast? NOT AT THIS TIME.
7. Is freezing rain/ice in the forecast? Monitor. See the videos in your app, as well. Freezing rain is likely Monday morning and perhaps a portion of Monday afternoon over our western and northwestern counties.
That would include Butler County, Missouri north into Bollinger, Perry, and Ste Genevieve Counties. A chance in Randolph, Perry, Franklin, and Jefferson Counties in southern Illinois. I will monitor Jackson County.
The risk is lower as you travel southeast from there. The risk is higher as you travel northwest from there. A winter weather advisory has been issued for portions of the region. We will need to monitor to see if additional counties are added.
Freezing rain is rain that falls and instantly freezes on objects such as trees and power lines Freezing fog possible, as well.

Fire Weather Discussion
Winds become southeasterly today ahead of the next system. Freezing rain enters Southeast Missouri Monday morning, transitioning over to rain and spreading across the rest of the Quad State later on. Rain chances continue through the week as temperatures warm to well above normal.
A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

Forecast Discussion
An active weather pattern will continue into next weekend.
First off, we have made it through our crazy arctic temperatures. Earlier this morning, temperatures range from -5 to 10 above across the entire region. Bitterly cold pipe busting weather.
This has been a very expensive weather disaster for the nation. Undoubtedly a billion dollar event.
Thoughts and prayers for those impacted.
Local residents have been dealing with busted water pipes, busted water mains, dead car batteries, house fires, and car accidents. Sadly there have been several deaths in our local region because of the bitterly cold air.
People think about tornadoes and hurricanes causing damage, but artic outbreaks are equally destructive. Just in different a different way.
Let’s be thankful that this morning will be the last bitterly cold morning of the event.
Now, we will rapidly swing in the other direction. As a matter of fact, some counties will experience SIXTY degree weather this week! Widespread rain and thunderstorms will be the general rule, as well.
An ice event is likely from western Arkansas into Missouri and Illinois later tonight into tomorrow night.
This ice event will impact some of our local counties. Thankfully, ice totals in our local area are expected to be low enough to prevent tree and power line damage.
Keep in mind, it only takes a hint of freezing rain to cause travel issues. Roadways are cold. Surfaces are cold.
At this time, the primary concern will be across portions of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois. The NWS has issued a winter weather advisory in the area with the highest risk of impacts. Additional counties may need to be added. Thus, monitor updates moving forward.
My primary concern will be this area. Mainly our northwest counties. From Poplar Bluff, Missouri northeast towards Mt Vernon, Illinois.
I will monitor a row or two of counties southeast of the blue zone, as well.
Not to overwhelm you with graphics, but here is where the WPC/NOAA has placed the risk of freezing rain (trace amounts). The main concern will be travel impacts. A thin layer of ice can cause travel headaches. As we have seen over the past two weeks.

Seven day rain totals have increased. We now expect one to three inches of rain area-wide.

Welcome to mud season! This rain will help the drought stricken southlands. They have been dealing with severe drought for months.
Obviously, the ground is frozen. This kind of rain, especially where thunderstorms occur, could lead to standing water and flooding. I don’t expect widespread flash flooding, but low land flooding will be common. I expect nuisance flooding in areas that commonly experience issues with this type of weather.
We will have to see if the NWS issues any flood watches or products. That would be more likely Wednesday and Thursday with the thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms will enhance rain totals Wednesday and Thursday. The risk of thunderstorms is higher from the Missouri Bootheel into Tennessee and Kentucky.
At this time, severe thunderstorms are not anticipated. Monitor updates, as always.

I am watching the track of a weekend storm system. The low is forecast to track south and east of our area. That places us in the cooler section. At times, models have shown a chance of snow.
For now, I have rain in the forecast. But, I will monitor it closely.
We have about eight weeks of snow season left. I doubt we are finished with cold wintry weather. I know some of you still one more snow. I love snow, but I am not a fan of what we just went through. That is a bit too much! The cold.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
