Fire Weather Discussion

Relatively light winds and cloud cover should keep mixing heights low across the region today. Leading to relatively poor smoke dispersal. Higher mixing heights are possible Saturday with a moderate east breeze. A chance of wetting rains is forecast Sunday across the Ozark Plateau into the Ozark Foothills.

A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

Weather Highlights

    1.    Mild today and Saturday.  Dry.
    2.    Scattered showers (mainly south) Saturday night into Sunday.
    3.    Watching a system around February 9th and 12th.

Weather advice:

Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.

Forecast Discussion

A fairly calm weather pattern continues to rule.  We seem to swing from very active to calm.

It will be a bit cooler over our northeast counties today.  Not much, just a little.  A few clouds, as well.

Our next weather maker will arrive Saturday night into Sunday night.  This has been a pain to forecast.  The overall idea has not changed.

Higher rain probabilities over our southwest counties.  Lower rain probabilities over our northeast counites.  See graphics at the top of the blog.

The higher rain totals will be from Poplar Bluff into the Bootheel of Missouri.  Lower totals as you travel northeast.  Sharp gradient.

Any shift in the storm track would cause these rain totals to slightly move northeast or southwest.  Keep that in mind.

Monday is shaping up dry.  Tuesday and Wednesday, as well.

I am watching a system next Thursday and Friday.

Models show wild swings in the strength of the storm systems.

Here is the Thursday/Friday system.  This appears to be a wet system.  Not white.

Another system around the 12th.  For now, the GFS shows rain.  Maybe some storms.

The GFS shows another system around the 15th.

Too early to get overly excited about any of these systems.  Let’s keep an eye on trends.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
