July 17, 2026: Warm. A few showers and storms. Wildfire smoke next week?

.

.

Key Seven-Day Weather Information

.

A large area of high pressure remains over much of the country today. Because winds are light and many areas received rain yesterday, patchy fog may develop early this morning, especially in low-lying areas.

⛈️ Today

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon as warm, humid air remains in place.

  • The best chance for rain will be near the Evansville Tri-State area.
  • Most storms will be typical summertime storms.
  • 🌧️ Some storms could produce very heavy rainfall, which may cause minor flooding in poor drainage and low-lying areas.
  • ⚠️ Widespread severe weather is not expected today through Tuesday.

⛈️ Saturday

Another round of afternoon showers and thunderstorms is expected Saturday.

A cold front will move through the region Saturday night, bringing another chance for storms.

The Evansville Tri-State area has a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for a few strong storms, mainly with the potential for gusty straight-line winds. The overall severe weather threat remains low.

🌦️ Sunday

Rain chances may increase again on Sunday as another weather disturbance moves through the region.

🌤️ Early Next Week

Monday and Tuesday should be mostly dry, although a few isolated showers or storms are still possible, especially across the northeastern part of the region on Tuesday.

🌡️ Heat Returns

Temperatures will gradually warm over the next several days.

  • Highs will climb into the 90s by early next week.
  • 🥵 Heat index values will be around 100 degrees and could reach 105 degrees by Tuesday.

A cold front is expected to move through Tuesday night, bringing cooler air by Wednesday.

🌫️ Canadian Wildfire Smoke

Smoke from large wildfires in Canada has created very poor air quality across parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.

Our area is not expected to experience the worst of the smoke at this time, but anyone traveling north or northeast of the Quad State region should check local air quality reports.

People with asthma, heart disease, or other breathing problems should limit time outdoors if air quality becomes unhealthy.

Satellite imagery shows the thick unhealthy smoke.

Here are today’s rain probabilities (% chance of rain).

As you can see, chances are higher east northeast vs west southwest.

Seven-Day Hazardous Weather Outlook

1. Is lightning in the forecast?  YES.  Scattered lightning risk this week.  Chances may increase again towards the middle of next week.

2. Is flash flooding in the forecast?  LOW RISK.   Slow-moving summer thunderstorms can produce pockets of heavy rain.  These rains could briefly overwhelm drainage systems.  Typical for summer.

3. Will non-thunderstorm winds top 40 mph? NO.

4. Will the temperature rise above 90 degrees?  YES.  Scattered into early next week.  It appears a bit cooler air is possible towards the middle of next week.

5. Is the heat index forecast to rise above 100 degrees? POSSIBLE.  Scattered this weekend.  Away from clouds and precip. Heat index values could hover around 100 degrees.  Perhaps a bit higher.

6. Is the heat index forecast to rise above 110 degrees? NO.

Let’s Look At The Five-Day Rainfall Totals Forecast

⚠️ This won’t be exact because the graphic is trying to predict where summer storms will form.

Some areas will receive higher totals.   Summer thunderstorms can produce a wide range of totals.

Take a general idea from these graphics.

Let’s look at the four-day rain probability maps.   What is the % chance of rain?

These maps are broken down into 12-hour time periods.

* Remember, a 20% chance of rain during the summer months does not mean that it will not rain.  It means there will be a few thunderstorms on the radar.

** NEW SERVICE **  I have partnered with WeatherCall to bring you an added layer of protection.
.
More information on the WeatherCall subscription service at the link below or use the QR code.

.
We have a new service to complement your www.weathertalk.com subscription.  This does NOT replace www.weathertalk.com It is simply another tool for you to receive severe weather information.

I use it myself. I encourage everyone to have 3 to 5 ways to receive severe weather information. All sources can fail, and the more sources you have, the better prepared you will be in the event of severe weather warnings.
.
WeatherCall will call your cell phone or home number if your home is under a tornado or severe thunderstorm warning.  It only calls you if your home is inside the warning box/polygon. If you are outside the warning box/polygon, it will not disturb you.
Here is a video with more information and a demonstration of how it works.
