Weather Highlights

    1.    Great forecast numbers if you like sunshine.
    2.    Cooler and less humid Thursday into the weekend.
    3.    I will continue to monitor an upper level low this weekend into early next week.

Weather advice:

As we prepare for spring, let’s make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.

.

Forecast Discussion

Nice weather!  Isolated showers and thunderstorms today.

Our weather is moving in from the north northeast.

That is opposite of the way our weather usually arrives.

We call this a backdoor cold front. It will move south southwest and deliver cooler and less humid air into the region tonight and tomorrow.

Here is the front. The arrows show the direction it is moving.

There were a few showers and thunderstorms in the region Tuesday afternoon and evening.  Not much, but a few locations received rain.

We continue to be in a feast or famine rainfall situation.  Some of us need rain (badly) and others have had too much.

There will be a low-end chance of showers and thunderstorms today.

The yellow is spreading on this map.  Yellow represents several inches below average with rainfall totals.

Here is the precipitation anomaly from the past 30 days.

Brown represents well below average rainfall.

Double click on the images to enlarge them.

From the past 60 days.

An ABSOLUTE STUNNING forecast over the coming days.  Lower dew points arrive today.  Lower temperatures tonight into the weekend.

Widespread 70s will be common over the coming days.  An unusually dry air-mass will mean low humidity and dew points.  That means it will feel nice outside.

Amazing evenings, as well.

You can see the brown on this moisture map.  This is Friday.  Saturday into Monday appear the same.  An unusually dry air-mass for May.

The only question in the forecast is cloud cover.  The EC and GFS models bring clouds back into the region for the holiday weekend.  There is quite a bit of discussion among meteorologists about whether to go with clouds or sunshine.

This is the EC model cloud cover for Sunday afternoon.  Blue represents clouds.  The GFS model shows something similar.

Hopefully, we won’t have a lot of clouds.  If we do have clouds, then you can shave a few degrees off the expected high temperatures.

I went with partly cloudy.  Keep in mind, that an upper level low is situated to our south southeast.  That will bring clouds into the region is it shifts a tad farther to the north northwest.

The good news is that we are not expecting showers or thunderstorms Friday through Sunday.  Perhaps a small chance of an afternoon thunderstorm Monday.  Mainly over southeast Missouri.  I will monitor it.

Otherwise, an unusually quiet weather pattern for late May.

I continue to monitor an upper level low Sunday into Tuesday.  This low could spread some clouds and moisture back into our region.  For now, however, I have left the forecast dry.  Monitor updates.

NOAA has released the July through September precipitation outlook.  They have out region in above average precipitation.

This outlook covers southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and far northwest Tennessee.

Today through April 18th:  A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail.  The tornado risk is low, but not zero.  Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk.  The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.

.

Today’s Storm Prediction Center’s Severe Weather Outlook

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
