Forecast Discussion
Well, the forecast has been a struggle.
Upper level disturbances brought showers and thunderstorms to the region over the past day or two. Many areas remained dry. A few spots picked up rain.
There were even a few strong thunderstorms over northern portions of southern Illinois last night.
Radar, as of 7 am this morning, shows scattered showers and a few thunderstorms over mainly southern Illinois. These are moving off to the east. A few spots will pick up a brief shower.
The forecast, over the coming days, has been pushing towards a drier outcome vs a wetter one. Many areas need substantial rain, but just aren’t going to see it.
There will be at least a few showers and thunderstorms on radar today into the weekend. Many areas, however, will remain dry.
The chance of rain will peak over southeast Missouri through Sunday night. Rain showers will struggle to move east of the Mississippi River. That isn’t to say it won’t rain east of the Mississippi River. It is saying that the probabilities will be higher to the west.
It will be warm today and tomorrow. As a matter of fact, some areas could hit the upper 80s tomorrow! That is very warm for this late in the year.
It will turn cooler next week, by several degrees. Nothing extreme, but it will feel a bit more like autumn.
The October forecast is indicating higher than average probabilities for a colder than normal month.
Long Range Outlook. Looking towards winter.
As a reminder, our second “seasonal tornado peak” is upon us. Typically, OCT & NOV delivers volatile weather to our region. Tornadoes are common during the autumn months. As a matter of fact, some of our deadliest tornadoes occur during the autumn & winter months.
What can you do to prepare?

2. Make sure you have THREE TO FIVE ways of receiving your severe weather information. Do not depend on just one or two.
3. Check your favorite LOCAL weather sources on a regular basis. We are always on top of the situation. We will let you know when severe weather is expected.
4. Have a severe weather safety plan for you and your family (make sure kids know what to do when they are home alone)
5. Teach your kids where they live on the local radar map. Ask them, during the weather broadcast, to point out where they live.
