Today through September 22nd:  Widespread severe weather is unlikely.  A few storms could produce strong and gusty winds Tuesday afternoon and evening (along the cold front).  A low-end risk of a severe thunderstorm.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Cold front moves through the region Tuesday.
    2.   Cooler Wednesday into the weekend.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Weather Discussion

The primary weather story, over the coming five days, will be a strong cold front that will sweep across the region Tuesday and Tuesday night.  The front will usher in the coolest air of the season, thus far.  Some locations may dip into the 40s by Thursday and Friday morning.

We will have to deal with scattered showers and thunderstorms today.  It won’t be widespread and not everyone will receive rain.  Scattered.

There is plenty of moisture in the atmosphere.  Showers and thunderstorms will be able to produce locally heavy rain.

Shower and thunderstorm activity will increase late tonight and continue into Tuesday night.  This will happen west to east along the incoming cold front.

A few storms could produce gusty winds.  Locally heavy rain is likely, as well.

A broken band of precipitation will shift across the region as we move through Tuesday and Tuesday night.  Some locations will miss out on rainfall.  Keep that in mind.  Quite similar to recent months.  Feast or famine.  Some locations receive over an inch of rain and some receive no measurable rainfall.

The system will slow as it pushes out of our eastern counties late Tuesday night into Wednesday.  This will cause clouds and rain showers to linger longer over southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee.

The shower activity should come to an end by late Wednesday afternoon or evening over our far eastern counties.

Temperatures will be cooler as we move through the week.  It has been fairly cool over the last few days with clouds and precipitation.  Many locations have experienced highs in the 70s.

Expect widespread 70s Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Slightly milder by Sunday.

Overnight lows may very well dip into the 40s by Thursday and Friday mornings.  Sunday morning, as well.  This will be our first autumn cold front.

Severe weather is unlikely with this cold front.  I can’t rule out a strong thunderstorm with gusty winds.  The current thinking, however, is that wind gusts will remain below severe levels.

A band of thunderstorms will push into southeast Missouri nd southern Illinois late tonight.  A couple of those storms could produce gusty winds.

I will keep a close eye on western Kentucky and northwest Tennessee Tuesday afternoon.

There are some signals that the atmosphere might be slightly more unstable in that area.  So, if there were to be a few intense thunderstorms, then that would be more likely than the rest of the area.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
