Weather Discussion
A slow moving cold front is currently situated over our northern counties (as of 7 AM). This front has been the focus for showers and thunderstorms over the past 12-hours. Some of the rain has been locally heavy. A few storms produced gusty winds, as well.
The front will slowly sag southward through today. That will mean increasing scattered shower and thunderstorm activity across the rest of our region.
You can see the 7 AM radar image. Notice how most of the precipitation is located over our northern counties.
There was also some activity along our southern counties from the remnants of Hurricane Nicholas.
Rain chances will end north to south as we move through today.
By this evening, the front will be near the Kentucky/Tennessee border. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible this evening into early tonight across mainly far southeast Missouri into western Kentucky and Tennessee.
The forecast has been trending drier Thursday through Sunday. There will be daily low-end shower and thunderstorm chances. For the most part, however, the region will be drier.
Many of us could use some rain. It has been a typical summer with a WIDE range of precipitation totals across the region.
Another cold front will push towards the region next Tuesday and Wednesday. This will again increase shower and thunderstorm chances.
I am noticing an increase in cold fronts in the long range model data. This is an indication of a changing pattern. Autumn is approaching.
Remember, it is not unusual for our region to experience severe thunderstorms with tornadoes during October and November. Some of our deadlier tornadoes have been during the autumn months. Let’s keep this in the back of our mind as we move forward.
Let’s watch next weeks cold front. Might we dip into the 40s after it pushes across the region? The GFS model, which has a cold tendency, says perhaps!
There have been numerous winter forecasts published over the past month. Many are indicating a cold winter. I am not a huge fan of long range forecasts when it comes to specific details (like how much snow will fall). I will monitor some of the trends.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
