Today through October 16th: I am monitoring Friday. There could be some strong thunderstorms. Monitor updates.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

- Unsettled weather.
- Cooler by the weekend.

Weather Discussion
No weather concerns today. Dry weather.
A few showers and thunderstorms are possible tonight over our far western counties closer to Poplar Bluff into the St Louis, Missouri area. These showers and storms won’t make much eastward advancement.
By Wednesday, the region will come under the influence of a series of upper level disturbances and cold fronts. The strongest cold front will arrive Friday.
There will be at least scattered showers and thunderstorms over primarily southeast Missouri and southern Illinois tonight through Thursday. Any activity in Kentucky and Tennessee would be more isolated in nature.
A strong cold front nears the region Thursday night and Friday. This will push shower and thunderstorm chances further east into the rest of the region. Some of the showers and thunderstorms could produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds.
I am monitoring the severe weather risk Friday. There are some parameters coming together for severe weather, but once again CAPE may be missing. CAPE is instability. Unstable air-mass. The severe weather risk is near nil without some CAPE to work with.
Clouds may keep CAPE from developing. If that is the case then we will just be dealing with some locally heavy rain.
A few showers may linger into Saturday. Much cooler air this weekend with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Not bad! Some autumn air.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
- The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
