An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming days
- Some clouds
- Four cold fronts
- Several chances for showers and thunderstorms
The weather has been dry for awhile. Here is the latest SPI index numbers. This is a measure of soil moisture. It does a better job vs the drought monitor maps.
I have marked our local states. This is a county map. Sometimes it is hard to read.
You can see quite a bit of yellow in our region. This is especially true for far southern Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The yellow colors represent abnormally to moderately dry.
.
I know farmers are enjoying the dry weather. Unfortunately, it is not going to last. I am tracking four cold fronts for the coming 7-10 day period. Each front will be accompanied by scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall totals will vary considerably. This is mainly because of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms can produce locally heavy rain. Average totals, however, should be in the 0.40″ to 0.80″ range. Again, some areas could top one inch (because of thunderstorms).
The first cold front will arrive on Wednesday afternoon and night. Shower and thunderstorm chances will first arrive over southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois. This could occur as early as Wednesday afternoon. Better rain chances will arrive late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night.
Rain should end by Thursday morning.
Another cold front will push into our region on Friday. Shower and thunderstorm chances will increase on Friday morning into the evening hours. There are still some timing differences in the guidance as to when the front pushes through the region.
Saturday should remain dry.
Another cold front arrives on Sunday and Sunday night. More showers and thunderstorms will accompany that cold front. Rain should end by Monday morning.
Monday and Monday night should remain dry.
Another cold front is forecast to arrive around Tuesday and Tuesday night. Lower confidence on the timing of that front. Still several days away.
The good news is that I don’t foresee severe weather through Saturday night. Lightning will be the main concern for outdoor events.
Temperatures will average above normal ahead of the fronts and dip slightly below normal behind the fronts. Still no frost in the forecast.
Here is what the GFS guidance is spitting out for rainfall totals. This is through Sunday night. The GFS does paint some locally heavy rain.
This is just that one models opinion on rainfall totals. Click graphic to enlarge.
How much rain is NOAA forecasting to fall over the coming days?
.
Rainfall totals over the coming seven days will vary. Thunderstorms could produce locally heavy rain. Average rainfall totals from Wednesday through Sunday night should range from 0.40″-0.80″. Locally heavier rainfall totals are possible. Some areas could top one inch of rain.
Here is the rainfall forecast through Wednesday night. Click the image to enlarge.
Here is the seven day rainfall forecast. This will include the Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday rain events.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not seem to be updating then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.
If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

We also have a new national interactive radar – you can view that radar by clicking here.
Local interactive city radars include St Louis, Mt Vernon, Evansville, Poplar Bluff, Cape Girardeau, Marion, Paducah, Hopkinsville, Memphis, Nashville, Dyersburg, and all of eastern Kentucky – these are interactive radars. Local city radars – click here

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?
I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s. I have 37 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Geo-sciences with a concentration in Broadcast Meteorology. I graduated from Mississippi State University.
My resume includes:
Member of the American Meteorological Society.
NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.
Meteorologist for McCracken County Emergency Management. I served from 2005 through 2015
Meteorologist for the McCracken County Rescue Squad 2015-current
I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.
Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross.
In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.
Recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.
I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
