Fire Weather Discussion

Low mixing heights are expected today before rain showers develop late this morning and persist through this evening. A strong cold front moves in behind the rain. Thursday and Friday are expected to be cool and dry with relatively low RH and a northwest breeze.

A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

Weather Highlights and Forecast Discussion

    1.    Rain moves in today and tonight.  Overall,  a light rainfall event.
    2.    Turning much colder tomorrow into next week.  Several nights in the teens.  Low wind chill values, as well.
    3.    I will keep an eye on a light snow system on Saturday.

Beau’s Forecast Discussion

Happy Thanksgiving week.   I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday week.

Good morning, everyone.

We are waking up to cloudy sky conditions.  There are a few light showers on radar.

Rain chances will ramp up as we move into the afternoon and evening hours.  Showers will become numerous on radar.

You can see that on the future-cast radars.

Time stamp is in Zulu.  00z=6 pm.  06z=12 am.  12z=6 am.  18z=12 pm.

The Hrrr model shows those showers developing throughout today into tonight.

Double click images and animations to enlarge them.

Here is the NAM 3K model.

Rainfall totals will be light.   Not much in the Poplar Bluff area.  Up to 0.25″ over our eastern counties.

Colder air will filter into the region tonight and that cold air will linger into next week.  We will have several nights with lows in the teens.  Near record cold levels.

Wind chill values will be even colder.

Check out these numbers from the Paducah, Kentucky, NWS

Double click the image to enlarge.  Extended cold.

This cold wave will be harsh on those who must work outdoors, the homeless communities, and pets/livestock.  A prolonged period of below average temperatures.

Don’t forget our outdoor friends.

Wind chill values will dip into the teens and single digits later this week/weekend.  Wind chill is what the body feels.

Kids at the bus stop next week will need to be bundled up.  It will be cold.

Let’s look at some of those overnight lows

This Friday morning

Saturday

Sunday morning

Monday morning

High temperatures Friday through Monday will mostly be in the 30s!

Saturday Snow Chances

Here is where the Paducah, Kentucky NWS has placed the highest chance of a dusting to an inch of snow.

For now, the chance is low.

A fast moving Canadian clipper system will bring increasing clouds to the region Saturday.

A band of light snow will accompany the system.  It will be moving northwest to southeast.  There remain questions about whether accumulating snow will develop.

Temperatures on Saturday may be mostly near or above freezing.  If the system moves through during the daylight hours, then the chance of impacts is low.

If the system moves through later in the day/evening, then some icy roads may develop.

My main concern is whether moisture remains on roadways Saturday night.  With temperatures falling into the teens, the roads will be cold.  Any remaining moisture could freeze  on surfaces.

Monitor updates.

I will keep an eye on it.

Here are the GEFS and EC ensembles.

What is the probability of an inch of snow?
