Beau’s Forecast Discussion

Happy Thanksgiving week.   I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday week.

A cold front will push into the region today.  It will be accompanied by clouds, falling temperatures, and a few light showers.

Rainfall totals will be light.  Some of you will receive no rainfall.  Others will pick up a trace to 0.10″.

Here is the official rainfall forecast from the WPC.

Temperatures will peak this morning over southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois.  Topping off in the 50s to around 60.  Highs will be in the 60s across the rest of the region.

You can see those falling temperatures on this graphic.

Double click  the animation to enlarge it.  Time-stamp upper left.

Temperatures will fall behind the front.  Temperatures will fall into the 40s by this afternoon over portions of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois.  Gusty northwest winds will make it feel colder behind the front.

The bulk of the rain will occur from late morning into the afternoon hours.   Let’s look at two future-cast radars.  The NAM 3K model and the Hrrr model.

Time stamp is in Zulu.  00z=6 pm.  06z=12 am.  12z=6 am.  18z=12 pm.

Hrrr model. This is showing you today’s rain event.  Scattered showers.

Double click images and animations to enlarge them.

NAM 3k model.  This is showing you today’s rain event.

Again rain totals today will be light.  Some areas will receive no rain.

It will turn colder tonight with lows in the upper 20s and lower 30s.  A freeze is possible in some counties.  That means temperatures at or below 32 degrees.

The next precipitation system arrives Wednesday and Thursday.

We are finally starting to get this system into the forecast range.  It continues to trend weaker and flatter.  Farther south.  That means lower rain totals and a shorter event.

There could be a few showers during the day on Wednesday.  Peak rain chances, however, won’t arrive until Wednesday evening and night.  Then, rain tapers off on Thanksgiving morning.

If we are lucky, then Thanksgiving will end up mostly dry.  Some morning showers are the most likely outcome.  Then, a chilly day but dry.

Here is the EC model. What radar might look like Wednesday and Thursday.

Here is the GFS model

For now, these are the anticipated rainfall totals from the Wednesday and Thursday event.

As you can see, totals have been lowered compared with the forecast 24 hours ago.

Double click the graphic  to enlarge it.

The next weather story will be the cold air that arrives Thursday night into much of next week.

We will have several days with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens and twenties.  Wind chill values will dip into the single digits to teens.

This will be a prolonged cold spell.  Lasting several days.

You will want to get the winter gear out.  Gloves and mittens for the children.  Heavy coats for the bus-stop next week.  Brrr weather.

Don’t forget our outdoor friends, as well.

Wind chill values will dip into the teens and single digits later this week/weekend.  Wind chill is what the body feels.

Kids at the bus stop next week will need to be bundled up.  It will be cold.

Let’s look at some of those overnight lows

This Friday morning

Saturday

Sunday morning

Sunday high temperatures

Here is another view of temperatures.  I chose Paducah as a center point.

This is from the EC model

Blend of model temperatures

As you can see, it will stay chilly for a while.

This animation shows you how many degrees below normal temperatures will be.

The numbers represent the anomaly.  How many degrees below average.  Not the actual temperature.

Average highs for this time of the year are in the 50s.  Average lows are in the 30s.

Double click the animation to enlarge it.

You can see several rounds of cold temperatures pouring into the Ohio Valley today into next week.  Some days WELL below seasonal averages.

A fast moving clipper system will bring an increase in clouds Saturday and Sunday.

A few snow flurries or snow showers will be possible Saturday and Sunday.  For now, this does not appear to be a significant event, but I will keep a close eye on it.

I will monitor the system in case the intensity changes.  For now, I have flurries or snow showers in the Saturday/Sunday forecast.

The Canadian model shows that band of snow.  It does produce some accumulation.  Long shot, for now.

Again, it will remain cold into next week.

No significant snow or ice events in the charts.  I keep watching.
