Breezy conditions can be expected today into early Tuesday ahead of an approaching slow moving cold front. Winds will be out of the south today and tonight ahead of the front before shifting to the west Tuesday, then northwest Tuesday night. Wetting rains are expected tonight into Tuesday morning. Dispersion will be fair to good today, then fair to poor Tuesday. Mixing heights will be 2200-2800 feet Monday, increasing to around 3500 feet Tuesday. Temperatures will trend colder for the last half of the week with most of the area seeing below normal temperatures. Another round of gusty west winds in the 20 to 30 mph range can be expected for Wednesday and Thursday.

A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

Beau’s Forecast Discussion

Good day, everyone.

Well, I hope you had a nice weekend.  Many of you told me you mowed your yards.  We are raking leaves and mowing yards in the middle of November.

Normally, by now, the grass growing season would have ended.  Just not the year for that!  Not yet, at least.

Today will feel like spring.  Highs will pop to near 70 degrees at many reporting stations.  That is well above seasonal averages.  Seasonal averages are in the 50s for highs and 30s for lows.

We will be well above that into tomorrow.

We do have a few showers on the radar this morning.  Mainly over southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois.  That rain is moving northward.

You can see that on this 6 am radar animation.

Those rain showers will continue to move north northeast through the morning hours.

Most of today will then be dry.  Mild.  Windy.  Winds will pick up this afternoon and tonight.  Gusting into the 20 to 35 mph range.

A band of showers and thunderstorms (no severe storms) will push across the region tonight.  That will deliver mostly light rain totals.

Here are the anticipated rain totals.  A trace to 0.25″.

Western counties of southeast Missouri

The rest of the region

Here are some future-cast radars.  What radar might look like today and tonight.

NAM 3K model

Tuesday will deliver well above average temperatures.  Highs in the 60s and 70s!

Another system will dive into the region from the Great Lakes on Wednesday and Thursday.

This will bring increasing clouds from the north.  Gusty winds of 15 to 30 mph.  Falling temperatures.  A few showers are possible, as well.

The highest probability of rain will be across southeast Illinois and northwest Kentucky.  I capped chances around 20% to 30%.  The highest chance will be on Thursday.

The rain could mix with small hail or graupel.  No impacts.  No accumulation.  Just a novelty.

It might be cold enough for the rain to mix with snow or graupel.  No impacts.  No accumulation.  Novelty, if it occurs.

It will be chilly Wednesday into the weekend with highs in the 40s and 50s.  Lows in the 30s.

Gusty winds will push wind chill values into the 20s, at times.  Bundle the kids up.  It will feel colder, since it has been so warm over the past three weeks.

There could be an opportunity for a frost on Friday and Saturday night.  Lows will dip into the low to middle 30s.  We will have to see if some cold-favored locations dip into the upper 20s to around freezing.  It will be close.

I am watching one or two systems the week of Thanksgiving.  The primary system appears on Wednesday the 27th.  Models are still all over the place with the strength of that system.  We may have additional shower and thunderstorm chances with it.

The GFS system has Thanksgiving dry.

The EC has that system moving slower and brings it into the region on Thanksgiving Day.

Long way off, but that is how the data is shaping up.  I will need to monitor trends and update accordingly.

Have a great Monday!
