Today through May 14th:  There is a small risk of severe weather today.  The main concern would be gusty winds and hail.  Overall, the risk at any given location is small.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Showers and thunderstorms today.  Ending tonight.
    2.   Dry Saturday through Wednesday.
    3.   Hot weather next week.  Muggy, as well.
    4.   June through August graphics updated.  Scroll further down for those.

Forecast Discussion

I said yesterday that if instability did not develop then we would not have severe thunderstorms.  That is what happened.  Clouds and precipitation kept everything in check.  Thankfully.

There were a few strong storms in our far southeastern counties.  Near Hopkinsville.  Those were handled with special weather statements.

All in all a good forecast based on me telling you that without instability we would not have severe weather.  It all came down to that.

Had we cleared out then we would have experienced severe storms.  That happens a lot in our region.  I call these conditional risk days.

.

Today through Sunday

An upper level low will pivot through our region today.  We are already seeing showers and thunderstorms on radar.

We will have a couple of chances of storms today.

One round this morning and one round this afternoon.  A couple of the storms later today could produce strong wind gusts and hail.  There is a low-end chance of a severe thunderstorm warning.  Overall, the risk of severe weather at your location is very small.

All of this mess will exit this evening and overnight.

Gusty winds today and tomorrow.

Clouds may linger into Saturday.  I do expect some clearing from west to east as we move through the day.  Mild temperatures.

A warming trend begins Sunday.  Much warmer, actually.

Expect widespread 80s Sunday.

.

Next week

Expect 90s Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Dry conditions.

It will feel muggy.  Summer air.  Heat index values of 94 to 98 are likely next week.  Dew points well into the 60s and perhaps even 70s.

Warmest/muggiest days will likely be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

At this time, it appears Thursday into the weekend won’t be quite as hot.  This will need to be monitored.  The high temperature numbers will be highly dependent on how fast the ridge of high pressure shunts eastward.  If it slows, then expect 90s to continue beyond Wednesday.

As far as rain chances, for now Sunday through Thursday appear dry.

A couple of intense thunderstorm complexes may attempt to approach our region from the north Wednesday and Thursday.  Guidance suggests the complex will dissipate before reaching our area.  I will monitor trends.

Otherwise, I am watching next weekend for shower and thunderstorm chances.  For now, however, confidence in that happening is low.

The circles represent potential record high temperatures.  Let’s look at the forecast numbers.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
