Today through May 24th: There is a chance of severe thunderstorms later today and this evening (Thursday). The primary concern will be damaging wind and hail. A low-end tornado risk.
A few storms could be intense Saturday afternoon and night. The primary concern will be high wind and hail.
Additional storms are possible next week. It is too early to know if severe weather will be a concern.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Forecast Discussion
Well, being sick was no fun! I am feeling better now.
We have an active weather pattern over the next seven days.
Now, I know some of you desperately need rain. It was wet for a while. Until it wasn’t. Seems some locations are quite dry. I don’t like to see dry weather entering the summer months. Thus, let’s hope we get some moisture in the ground over the coming seven days. Decent chances.
A complex of thunderstorms is approaching the region from southwest Missouri. It is moving east/northeast.
Here is the 8:30 AM radar image. You can see those storms with severe thunderstorm warnings (red outline). The numbers represent the current muggy dew points.
High resolution guidance indicates this area of showers and thunderstorms will push into our region by late morning and early afternoon. Some of the storms could be severe with damaging wind and hail.
There remain some questions about the placement of this activity. It does appear the the northern half of the region should have the higher precipitation chances.
That would include southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, and northwest Kentucky.
Further south, we will just have to see how things trend. It is possible that additional storms form further south. The atmosphere will be very unstable this afternoon with very high CAPE values.
Wind shear will be modest. Dew points will be high.
Any storms that form will produce torrential downpours and frequent lightning.
The atmosphere will become capped tonight. That will shut down precipitation chances through Friday night.
A strong cold front will push into the region late Saturday into Saturday night.
The trend in guidance has been to slow this front. At one point it was supposed to move through the region Friday and Friday night. Now, it appears that it won’t push across the region until Saturday night/Sunday morning.
For those with outdoor activities Saturday, you will want to monitor updates and radars. Have a plan B, just in case rain develops. It is possible that we luck out and the rain holds off until the overnight hours.
A few of those thunderstorms could produce gusty wind and hail. Heavy rain and lightning, as well.
It will be quite windy Friday into Saturday. Winds will be from the south/southwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts above 30 mph. Boaters use care. Those with outdoor activities will want to plan on gusty winds.
A few showers will remain with us Sunday. Nothing to write home about.
It will turn cooler Saturday night into Monday.
It does appear that several disturbances will bring rain chances to our region Monday night into at least Wednesday night (perhaps beyond). If you need rain, then this will be your chance.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
