7-day forecast for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.

This is a BLEND for the region. See the detailed region by region forecast further down in this post.

Drought monitor shows widespread drought to our west and then across the northern United States and then east/southeast from there.

This is a concern this summer in those areas.  We will have to watch our region, as well.  For now, we are okay.

Today through May 24th:  Severe weather is not anticipated.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Showers and thunderstorms today.
    2.   Decreasing rain coverage tonight into at least Monday.
    3.   Much warmer air is on the way!

.

Radar shows widespread showers in the region.  That was as of 8 AM.  This rain was spreading northward through the area.  There were also dry patches in-between the showers and thunderstorms.  Mostly showers.  A few lightning strikes.

We do not expect severe thunderstorms through next Monday.

A heat of the day thunderstorm Wednesday into Monday could be intense, but with the ridge of high pressure strengthening, the threat of storms is decreasing.  There will eventually be a strong cap on the atmosphere.  A lid, if you will.  That helps prevent thunderstorms from forming.

Thursday through Sunday will likely deliver at or below 10%  chances of afternoon thunderstorms.

Some of the models show upper 80s to around 90 degrees by the weekend into early next week.  We will see if we can achieve those higher numbers.  Either way, we are going to have a nice string of days with 80 and above.  That will be refreshing for those who are tired of all the below average temperatures.  For once, we will push in the opposite  direction.

I am watching some cooler air towards the middle or end of next week.  That is a long way off in the weather world.  Plenty of time to monitor.

Here is the GFS model animation of temperature anomalies.  Red represents above average temperatures.  Blue represents below average.  Lot of red later this week into next week, for once.  You can see the time and date stamps at the topic of the animation.

If you click on the animation or graphics, then you can view a larger image.

.

The reason for the heat is a ridge of high pressure.

We have low pressure and high pressure in the atmosphere.

Notice the trend on this graphic is redder.  That is the ridge of high pressure.  High pressure (this time of the year) typically means hot conditions.  At least warm.

We will have widespread middle to upper 80s because of this strengthening ridge.

The trend graphic shows you the redder colors intensifying over our local area.  That equals warm temperatures.  I reserve the word hot for 90 and above.

Could we reach 90 degrees?  Possibly.  If that were to occur it would be during the Saturday to Tuesday time-frame.

.

Let’s take a look at some high temperatures.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
  3. The EC European weather model is in Zulu time.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
