Forecast Discussion

Welcome to May 2023! We made it through April without too many severe weather events. Let’s hope May is quiet on the tornado front, as well.

A nice day ahead of us. Some gusty winds.

Dry conditions today through Wednesday night. No weather concerns. That is the good news.

Temperatures will slowly trend higher as we move through the week.

Seasonal levels would be low to mid 70s for high temperatures. Temperatures have been mostly below average over the last several weeks.

A couple of weak systems will move into the region Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

As mentioned above, confidence in the Saturday/Sunday event is low. Confidence in the Thursday and Friday system is high.

Peak rain chances are forecast to arrive late Thursday night into Friday evening. This is when rain coverage is expected to be higher.

A few rumbles of thunder will be possible, as well. But, at this time, the threat of severe weather appears nil. I will monitor that, as well. It is May and our peak tornado season is May into early June.

For now, however, I am not forecast severe weather this week.

Rainfall totals through Sunday.

Confidence in rain totals is medium. I am more confident about rain chances Thursday into Friday. I am less confident on additional rain Saturday and Sunday. I will need to monitor trends in the guidance and continue to update as we move forward.

For now, I have low end rain chances Saturday and Sunday.

If the Saturday/Sunday rain does not materialize, then cut about .25 to .50 from these totals.

This outlook covers southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and far northwest Tennessee.

Today through April 18th: A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail. The tornado risk is low, but not zero. Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk. The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
