48-hour forecast

Monday to Monday

1. Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.  Today.

2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  Monitor.  A few storms today could be intense along the cold front.  The threat will end once the front pushes to the east of your location.  The primary concern is this morning.

The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes

3. Is flash flooding in the forecast?  Yes.  Locally heavy rain along the cold front today.  The concerns end once the front pushes east of your location.

4. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees?  Possible.  Friday night and Saturday morning and again Saturday night.

5.  Is measurable snow or ice in the forecast?   Monitor.  Rain and rain/snow will be possible late Thursday night into Friday night.  It is too early to know if accumulating snow will be a concern.  Data is mixed on the idea.  Monitor updates.

6. Will the heat index top 100 degrees?  No.

Today through March 5th:  A few storms could be severe this morning.  The primary concern will be across portions of western Kentucky and Tennessee.  Once the front pushes eastward the risk of any severe weather will end.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.    Some showers and storm today.
    2.    A few light showers possible Tuesday night and Wednesday.
    3.    Much colder air filters into the region Thursday night and Friday (into the weekend).
    4.    Rain showers possible late Thursday night and Friday.
    5.    Rain may change to sleet and snow Friday/Friday night.  Monitor updates.

.

Weather advice:

Forecast Discussion

It was a long night.  I have not slept, yet.

I will keep this brief.

Showers and thunderstorms will push off to the east this morning.  Rain will come to an end west to east.

Falling temperatures today with gusty winds.

A couple of showers are possible Tuesday night.  Light.

Dry Wednesday into Thursday.

A strong cold front will sweep through the region Thursday night into Friday.  This front will bring some rain showers.

The big story with the Friday cold front will be falling temperatures.  Gusty winds.  Rain will accompany the front.

As the colder air pushes into the region, the rain may change to sleet and snow.  This will need to be monitored.  Some accumulation is possible.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
