48-hour forecast
.
.
Saturday to Saturday
1. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. Saturday night into Monday.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Monitor. A few storms could become severe Sunday night and Monday morning. The primary concern will be damaging wind gusts. There is a low-end tornado risk. This is a conditional risk. That means that some of the ingredients may not come together for severe weather. The best advice is to monitor updates.
The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Possible. Locally heavy rain is likely Saturday night into Monday. A widespread one to two of inches of rain is likely with this system. Locally higher totals are likely. If thunderstorms train over the same areas then some locations could easily exceed three inches of rain. Avoid flooded roadways.
4. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.
5. Is measurable snow or ice in the forecast? Possible. I am watching Friday. A strong cold front will usher in much colder air Friday into the weekend. Rain and snow may accompany the front. It is still too early to know if the snow will accumulate.
6. Will the heat index top 100 degrees? No.

Today through March 5th: Monitor updates. A few storms could be severe Sunday afternoon into Monday. The primary concern will likely be Sunday night into Monday morning.
A few storms could produce quarter size hail, 60 mph wind gusts, and even a short-lived tornado.
Here is the current Sunday and Sunday night outlook.
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
And then the Monday outlook. It appears the risk is higher Monday morning vs later in the day. That will partly depend on the exact timing of the front passage. I will monitor trends. If the front pushes eastward fast enough then there won’t be much threat Monday (during the day).

-
- Warm and wind today.
- Showers and thunderstorms developing tonight into Monday.
- Locally heavy rain this weekend.
- A few severe thunderstorms will be possible Sunday afternoon into Monday morning.

Weather advice:
Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages. We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner. Thus, we made the app. See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion
A beautiful day on tap for the region. Yes, some gusty winds, but temperatures will be in the 70s. We can handle that! I hope you can get out and enjoy the day.
The weather takes a turn tonight and tomorrow.
A cold front will push into the area tonight. This front will stall out over the area Sunday. It will become stationary. Several ripples of low pressure will push northeast along the front. Each of these disturbances will increase rain coverage.
See the future-cast radars further down in the blog.
It is possible that much of Sunday is dry across portions of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. Rain chances will be higher across the Missouri Bootheel, far southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee.
Either way, take your umbrella in case you have to deal with a shower or thunderstorm.
The severe weather risk is not zero Sunday afternoon, but I do believe the risk is higher as we move through Sunday night and Monday morning.
This is the time-period that an area of low pressure will push across the region from southwest to northeast.
This low will help surge higher dew-points into the region. It will also increase wind fields. Both are ingredients for severe weather.
You can see those dew-points surge northward in this animation. This is Sunday afternoon and night.
Dew-points are a measure of moisture. I generally look for upper 50s to 60s when considering a risk of severe thunderstorms.
Notice dew-points are lower further north. That is north of the warm front.
These maps are in Zulu time. 12z=6 AM. 18z=12 PM. 00z=6 PM. 06z=12 AM
Notice the 850 mb (higher up in the atmosphere) wind fields increase Sunday night. This is the low level jet that can help fuel storms.
These maps are in Zulu time. 12z=6 AM. 18z=12 PM. 00z=6 PM. 06z=12 AM
.
There are questions about whether or not there will be enough instability for severe thunderstorms. This is one portion of the forecast that I will be monitoring. CAPE. CAPE is basically energy for thunderstorms to tap into. Without CAPE there won’t be severe thunderstorms.
CAPE appears to be marginal for this event. If we end up with a bit more CAPE then the risk will be a tad higher.
The best dynamics appear to come together across far southeast Missouri, the Missouri Bootheel, far southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee. The risk is a bit higher in those areas vs areas further to the north. Either way, we should all monitor updates. I will send out app messages if severe weather develops.
Locally heavy rain will likely occur with this event.
I am expecting a widespread 1.o to 2.0″ of rain. Locally higher totals are likely. Avoid flooded roadways.
The WPC/NOAA has placed our region in a risk of excessive rainfall. That means flooding will be a concern. We don’t expect widespread flooding, but there could be a few spots with problems.
Here is the WPC/NOAA excessive rainfall outlook. This is for Sunday/Sunday night.
They also have our area outlooked for Monday morning, as well. Mainly Kentucky and Tennessee.
The WPC/NOAA rainfall totals forecast. A widespread one to two inches of rain. Locally higher.
Obviously, this won’t help the ongoing river flooding issues. River flooding may be an issue for a while.
.
Let’s look at the ensembles. GFS and EC models.
GFS ensemble mean through next Tuesday morning.
EC ensemble mean through next Tuesday morning.
.
A few light showers are possible Tuesday night and Wednesday.
I thought about leaving this time-period dry. I did in yesterday’s update. Some of the data brings a few showers further north. I went with low-end rain chances.
The EC and GFS model are both fairly far south with the rain. Either way, rain totals would be light.
GFS model Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
EC model Tuesday night/Wednesday.
.
Much colder by the end of the week into the weekend.
Cold air will sweep into the region Thursday night into Friday night. A few rain or rain/snow showers may accompany this cold front. It is too early to know if the there would be enough snow to accumulate. Monitor updates.
There are some differences in the model guidance with the exact timing of this cold air.
Here is a sample of what the data is showing. This is the GFS model. You are looking at temperatures.
These maps are in Zulu time. 12z=6 AM. 18z=12 PM. 00z=6 PM. 06z=12 AM

Notice how the cold front pushes across the region Friday. Some locations may experience their high temperatures early in the day. Then, temperatures will fall behind the front. Gusty winds, as well. This will make it feel colder.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
