An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming days…

Highlights

1.  Cold front on Thursday.  A few showers
2.  Decent weekend on tap for the region
3.  Let’s keep a close eye on next weeks weather.  Heavy rain event possible.

A cold front will move through the region on Thursday.  This system won’t have as much moisture to work with as the previous one.  But, a few showers will be possible.  Rainfall totals should be light.  They will range from no rain at all to perhaps 0.30″-0.50″ southern counties of southeast Missouri and northwest Tennessee.

Here are the rainfall probabilities for Thursday.  What is the % percent chance for X amount of rain.  Fairly light event.  There could be a thunderstorm or two mixed in.

2016-03-02_13-10-54
We will dry out on Thursday night and Friday.  The weekend will be dry, as well.  We might have a few showers by Sunday night.  Higher chances for rain next week.  As a matter of fact, some data shows heavy rain next week and thunderstorms.  Let’s keep a close eye on the setup.  Still some time before the details come into view.

Temperatures will be mild on Saturday and Sunday.  Upper 50s to lower 60s.  Whether we can reach middle 60s is still a question mark.  One can hope!  Spring is in the air.  Slowly but surely we are moving towards warmer weather.  Of course we are not finished with cold temperatures.  But, with each passing week we are closer and closer to putting winter behind us.  I know some of you have spring fever.  I also know some of you would still like some snow.

The GFS high temperature forecast for Saturday and Sunday.  We might end up a little warmer than this.  I am hoping for 60s on Sunday.

How much precipitation should we expect over the next few days?

Light rain is possible on Thursday.  Rainfall totals of 0.00″-0.25″ are possible.  A few spots could pick up a bit more than that.  Watching March 8th-10th for a heavier rain event.

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?

I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s.  I have 37 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns.  My degree is in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University and an Associate of Science (AS).  I am currently working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Geoscience.

My resume includes:

Member of the American Meteorological Society.

NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.

Meteorologist for McCracken County Emergency Management.  I served from 2005 through 2015.

I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.

Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross

In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.

Recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.

I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
