1. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. Lightning is likely Saturday night into Sunday night. Another chance Wednesday into Friday of next week.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Possible. Thunderstorms could be severe Sunday afternoon and evening. Damaging wind will be the primary concern. Hail will be possible, as well. The tornado risk is low. We could have additional severe weather towards the middle of next week, as well. Monitor updates moving forward.

Forecast Discussion
Mild weather. Low dew points into Saturday. Nice weather.
Thunderstorm chances ramping up.
The good news is that we have rain in the forecast.
The first widespread rain event in quite some time. All of the region needs rain. All of the region needs a soaking rain.
We will have a small chance of thunderstorms Saturday afternoon over southeast Missouri. The vast majority of the region will remain dry.
Shower and thunderstorm chances will ramp up Saturday night into Sunday morning. Numerous showers and thunderstorms will occur Sunday and Sunday evening.
A widespread 0.6″ to 1.2″ is anticipated. Pockets of 1.2″ to 2.0″ will also likely occur. Locally higher totals can’t be ruled out.
The hope is that everyone receives a decent rain event. As always, totals will vary.
Showers and thunderstorm chances will continue into Sunday evening and then diminish overnight.
I continue to monitor the middle of next week for thunderstorm chances. Some of those could be severe. Confidence in the next weeks system remains on the low side.
There is significant disagreement in the data concerning the placement of the front boundary next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Stay tuned.
Forecast Discussion
Dry conditions are spreading.
Here is the latest drought monitor maps (released Thursday).
So far, we are still only in the D0 level zone. Not drought. D1 would be drought.
One more week of dry weather and many areas will enter moderate drought. Thankfully, some rain is coming.
Sunday’s rain chances should help our cause. It won’t end the abnormally dry spell, but it will certainly help. Fingers crossed for the gardens and fields.
It will be nice today into Saturday.
Great outdoor weather. Great camping weather.
We will have some haze today. That is because of the Canadian wildfires. That smoke has been much thicker to our northeast. You likely saw some of the photos from New York City. Extremely poor breathing conditions in those areas.
A cold front will push into the region Saturday night and Sunday.
That front will set the stage for showers and thunderstorms. Widespread precipitation.
There will be an unstable atmosphere Sunday afternoon and evening. That means some of the thunderstorms could become severe with damaging wind and hail. Frequent lightning will be a concern for outdoor activities. Locally heavy rain.
The tornado risk is low, but not zero. When you have severe thunderstorms, you can have a brief tornado. I will keep an eye on it.
Make sure you have your Beau Dodson Weather app handy. Have several ways of receiving severe weather information.
Monday and Tuesday will be dry.
The next big weather story becomes next weeks series of precipitation events.
There is the potential for a large severe weather outbreak, IF conditions come together as some of the data indicates.
The problem is the data is not in agreement.
The American models are shunting everything farther south. The European models are indicating a severe risk in our local area.
Until there is better agreement, there will be a low confidence stamp on next Wednesday through Friday’s weather forecast.
I am closely monitoring trends.
The systems in question will move ashore Sunday and Monday.
Confidence in the forecast, with time, will increase.
For now, I have included shower and thunderstorm chances in the long range forecast. Whether we have a threat of severe weather will need to be monitored.

Today through April 18th: A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail. The tornado risk is low, but not zero. Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk. The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
