48-hour forecast

.

.

Tuesday to Tuesday

1. Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.  An unsettled week of weather ahead of us.  There is a chance of lightning Tuesday, Tuesday night, Wednesday, Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday and Friday night.  It won’t rain all of the time.  On and off chances of thunderstorms.

2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  Yes.  A few storms this week could produce damaging wind and perhaps hail.  An isolated tornado risk.  The risk today is mainly across far southeast Missouri, the Missouri Bootheel, and along the Kentucky/Tennessee border southward.  The risk Wednesday is area-wide.  The risk Wednesday night is low.  I will need to monitor Friday.

The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes

3. Is flash flooding in the forecast?  Possible.  Multiple rounds of thunderstorms will be possible this week.  If we do have repeated rounds of storms then some flooding concerns could develop.  Monitor updates.

4. Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees?  No.

5.  Is measurable snow or ice in the forecast?   No.

6. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? No.

Today through June 12th:  A few storms this week could produce damaging wind and hail.  An isolated tornado risk.  The risk today is mainly across far southeast Missouri, the Missouri Bootheel, and along the Kentucky/Tennessee border southward.  The risk Wednesday is area-wide.  The risk Wednesday night is low.  I will need to monitor Friday.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Unsettled weather conditions.
    2.   On and off chances of showers and thunderstorms.
    3.   Locally heavy rain possible.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion

Tuesday through Saturday

We are waking up to patchy dense fog.  Visibility here at the Weather Observatory in northern Massac County is less than 300′ as of 6 am.  Dense fog!  Use care.

Showers and thunderstorms impacted the area Monday.  Some of the storms produced gusty wind, torrential downpours, and lightning.  No severe weather was reported in our local area.  Rain totals ranged from less than 0.10″ to over 2.50″.  A wide range of precipitation.

Double click on the image to enlarge it.

Heaviest totals were over western Kentucky.

Double click on the image to enlarge it.

We are going to have additional shower and thunderstorm chances today and tonight.  Another round Wednesday and Wednesday night.

It does appear that conditions will dry out Thursday and Thursday night.

Unfortunately, additional shower and thunderstorm chances will develop Friday and Friday night.  An active week of weather.

The good news is that Saturday and Sunday is shaping up to be nice.  We just have to get through the next few days.

Today’s activity will mainly be this afternoon and evening.

Expect showers and thunderstorms to redevelop along a stalled boundary.  That boundary is draped across our far southern counties.  Thus, the shower and thunderstorm activity should be more numerous across the Missouri Bootheel, far southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee.

Once again, locally heavy rain will be a concern where thunderstorms train over the same areas.  Rain totals will range from nothing to over two inches.  Again, the heaviest totals are likely to be across our southern counties.

Patchy dense fog will be possible over the next few nights.

You can see the Storm Prediction Center’s severe weather outlook has our region in a risk this afternoon and evening.  The risk is a bit higher over our far southern counties.  The yellow zone.

A complex of thunderstorms is likely to push across most of the region Wednesday.  Some of those storms could produce heavy rain and gusty winds.

I should say that data is a bit mixed on how Wednesday plays out.  The bulk of the data shows at least scattered showers and thunderstorms.  There are some model sets that show very little happening.

These thunderstorm complexes can be tricky to forecast.  Plan on some showers and thunderstorms on radar.

We should dry out late Wednesday night into Thursday.  This time period should be dry.  That is the current forecast.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible late Thursday night into Friday and Friday night.  There are questions about Saturday’s weather.  For now, I left it dry.  Monitor updates.

Again, it is not going to rain all the time.  Expect on and off scattered showers and thunderstorms.  There will be time periods with numerous showers and thunderstorms on the radar.  You will want to monitor updated forecast numbers.

Rain totals Monday through Saturday will vary greatly.  Where repeated thunderstorms occur you could easily see one to two inches of rain (perhaps more).  Other areas won’t receive nearly as much.

Typical for June, this is a feast or famine type pattern.  One county could end up with heavy rain and neighboring counties end up dry.  If you have lived here for awhile then you know exactly what type of pattern this is.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
