.

Wednesday to Wednesday

1. Is lightning in the forecast?  Yes.  A chance Thursday through Monday.  Perhaps Tuesday.

2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast?  Monitor.   Storms this time of the year could produce strong wind gusts and even hail.  Monitor updates.

The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes

3. Is flash flooding in the forecast?  Low-risk.  There could be brief water issues where thunderstorms occur.  Summer thunderstorms can produce torrential downpours.

5.  Is measurable snow or ice in the forecast?   No.

Today through July 10th:  Monitor updates.  Storms this time of the year can produce strong wind gusts and even hail.  Overall, the risk of organized severe weather is low.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Warming trend today into next week.
    2.   Unsettled weather over the weekend with at least scattered thunderstorm chances.
    3.   Locally heavy rain where storms occur.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion

Wednesday is delivering another nice day for the region.  High pressure is in control. One last day before things begin to become muggier and thunderstorm chances return.

Thursday will be warmer and more humid.  Gulf of Mexico air will begin to filter back into the region.  This additional moisture will help aid in the development of isolated thunderstorms as early as Thursday afternoon.  A few spots could pick up a storm.

The chances will be highest along the MO/AR and KY/TN border.  Many areas will simply remain dry.

A cold front will push into the region from the north Friday and linger into the weekend.

This cold front will become the focus for scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday into at least Monday and perhaps Tuesday.

There will be peak chances.  That would be Saturday and Sunday.

It is summer and there is no shortage of moisture for thunderstorms to tap into.  That means that where thunderstorms occur they could produce torrential brief downpours, frequent cloud to ground lightning. 50 mph wind gusts, and even small hail.

Summer thunderstorms can produce downburst winds of 50 mph or greater.  Keep that in mind.

Just keep that in mind if you are camping or have holiday outdoor activities.

This doesn’t look like an all day washout or anything like that.

I will need to monitor for an MCS.  If an MCS (thunderstorm cluster) forms, then the rain would last a bit longer.  Last Sunday we had an MCS move through the region and it rained (in some areas) for several hours.

That would be the only concern.  An MCS.

Otherwise, a fairly typical summer pattern for our region. Scattered thunderstorms with peak chances likely occurring during the heat of the day (12 PM through 7 PM).

Another heat wave is possible next week.  Hot and muggy weather is likely from Fourth of July into much of next week.

I would not cancel any outdoor plans.  Just check the Beau Dodson Weather radars from time to time.

Here is the official WPC/NOAA rainfall forecast through next Wednesday morning.  Keep in mind, totals will vary GREATLY.   Summer thunderstorms can produce an inch of rain in less than thirty-minutes.

This graphic is broad-brushed and won’t capture individual thunderstorms.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
