Forecast Discussion

The primary weather story is a cold front that has been pushing through the region over the past 24 hours. This front has been the focus for showers and thunderstorms. Locally heavy rain has fallen in some spots.

Some home weather stations in southern Illinois reported over five inches of rain!

I measured over two inches at my place in Massac County. Much needed.

Here were the radar estimated totals as of 12 PM Sunday. Still raining when I took this snapshot. Some BIG totals in some counties.

The next weather story is that Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will be much nicer. Lower temperatures. Nicer humidity levels. Pleasant weather is what I would call it. We deserve some pleasant weather after the last few weeks of heat.

June has been a hot one!

Let’s enjoy the early part of the new week.

We will start to see a warming trend Thursday into the weekend. Highs will again rise into the 90s. Dew points and humidity levels will also be on the rise.

The big change late in the week, compared with recent weeks, is that it appears we may find ourselves in a bit more of an unsettled weather pattern. Perhaps scattered showers and thunderstorms. Maybe even some thunderstorm complexes (called MCS’s). We will see.

For now, I have 30% to 40% chances of showers and thunderstorms late in the week. Those will likely be adjusted as confidence increases in the final outcome of each day.

If you have weekend plans then you will want to monitor the latest forecasts. We may have some thunderstorms in the area. I would not change my holiday weekend plans.

This week will be a fairly typical weather week for late June and early July.

There are signals that significant heat is going to return as we move into July. Perhaps above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation. That is the current thinking. Of course, long range forecasts carry lower confidence levels and adjustments are certainly possible. Let’s monitor the trends in the guidance. Monitor the long range videos, as well. They will cover all of this.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
