Today’s Average Regional Forecast Numbers
Tracking the Heat.
A severe weather outbreak struck the region yesterday.
There were numerous reports of nickel to baseball size hail. The bulk of the large hail was reported over western Kentucky.
There was significant wind damage in portions of far western Kentucky into northwest Kentucky, as well.
Hickman and Graves County had quite a bit of wind damage combined with golf ball size hail.
Owensboro, Kentucky, received baseball size hail! That left a mark.

Rain totals Saturday and Sunday totaled 0.00″ to over two inches. Once again, there was a wide range of rain totals. Some areas missed out, again.
There were field fires in Massac County, Illinois.

A testament to the very dry conditions.
Unfortunately, our drought conditions will worsen over the coming days.
We have a small chance of a shower this afternoon and evening over southeast Illinois and northwest Kentucky. Don’t expect much.
Dry conditions is anticipated Tuesday. Warm.
I have widely scattered showers Wednesday. Don’t expect much.
I have widely scattered thunderstorms possible Thursday and Friday with extensive heat.
The big weather story Thursday and Friday will be temperatures rising into the 100 to 105 degree range with pockets of heat index values of 105 to 110+ degrees.

It will be centered over Louisiana Thursday. That pushes the ridge northward into our region. That equals heat. Ridges usually mean heat. Troughs mean cooler and unsettled.
It will feel uncomfortable outside.
It has been several years since we have experienced widespread actual air temps of 100+ degrees.

Heat index is what it feels like to your body. The heat index is what causes heat illnesses.

The heat ridge, that will deliver that heat, will slowly push southward Saturday and Sunday. That will open the door for scattered thunderstorms Saturday into Sunday (and perhaps Monday).
Some of those thunderstorms could be strong/severe with heavy rain. Once again, we will have to monitor the track of each MCS (thunderstorm complex). That will be key to rainfall totals.
It is rare to have uniform rainfall during the summer months. Feast or famine weather. Some locations will receive very little rainfall and other locations will pick up an inch of more.
The pattern does appear active into July. It will just come down to storm track.
We have experienced widespread beneficial rains over the past two weeks across portions of the Missouri and Ohio Valleys southward to the Gulf of Mexico.
With that said, some areas have missed out and desperately need rain. I will keep searching!

Today through April 18th: A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail. The tornado risk is low, but not zero. Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk. The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.
