Today through June 26th: I am monitoring Wednesday for thunderstorms. Model guidance is mixed on the idea. A cold front will push into the region from the north. This could allow just enough lift for some thunderstorm activity. If storms develop, then they could be severe.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

Forecast Discussion

Temperatures Tuesday through Sunday will be hot. There is no way around that portion of the forecast.

The good news continues to be dew points. Last week we had dew points well into the 70s. That caused heat index values to jump into the 108 to 116 degree range. Locally even higher. Dangerous heat.

This week, dew points will remain in the 60s to around 70 degrees. This will keep heat index values around the actual air temperature.

With that said, it will still be hot. Several days will hit 100 degrees. Summer heat. There are some summers that we don’t even experience upper 90s.

This is our second heat wave since June 1st. We had last weeks heat wave. A break over the weekend. Now another wave of heat.

The guidance is showing the potential of a third heat wave next week. Perhaps a break early next week (similar to the one we had this past weekend).

The summer forecast has been for waves of heat. The pattern would build in and out and then back in.

The EC ensemble heat matrix shows the potential of a third heat wave next week. This week is our second one. We had a small weekend break. Now, more heat.

The overall pattern looks to repeat.

The day/date is at the bottom. The numbers on the left are the model ensemble number. The EC has 50 ensemble members.

Ensembles are the same model ran over and over and over again with slightly different beginning variables.

The general idea is that the more the numbers in the column agree, the higher the confidence in the eventual outcome.

The coming seven days will offer two chances of showers and thunderstorms.

A weak cold front will push into the region both Wednesday and Sunday. This is when a few storms may develop.

There will be plenty of energy in the atmosphere over the coming week. All of this heat and humidity will cause CAPE values to rise. CAPE is energy that storms tap into.

The good news is that wind fields will be light. Stronger wind fields would increase the severe thunderstorm risk.

As it stands, any storms that form could produce torrential summer downpours, frequent cloud to ground lightning, strong and gusty winds, and small hail. You can always have isolated downbursts in summer thunderstorms.

A downburst is a quick burst of wind that can bring down tree limbs and power lines. They are usually small in size. Difficult to issue warnings on, as well. They only last a few minutes.

Otherwise, dry conditions are anticipated this week. Some of you received rain last week, thankfully. Not everyone. We still need rain to avoid drought.

You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
