Today through June 24th: A few storms could be severe Thursday night and Friday. Confidence in thunderstorm coverage is low. We have an incoming cold front that could spark a few storms. Monitor updates. The concern will be damaging wind and hail.
.
.
Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.
The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion
-
- Heat wave.
- Monitoring thunderstorm chances Thursday into Friday. Some storms could be severe (if they develop).
- Slightly cooler/less humid Friday and Saturday.
- Another heat wave develops Sunday into next week. Hot!
Weather advice:
Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages. We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner. Thus, we made the app. See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion
Thursday through next Wednesday
A cold front will push into the region Thursday into Friday. This front will slowly sag southward from northern Missouri and Illinois. It will stall over our northern counties Thursday and Thursday night. It will then push southward Friday.
Am isolated thunderstorm is possible this afternoon near Mt Vernon over towards Evansville. Chances are low, but not zero.
Thunderstorm chances increase late tonight into Friday morning. Model guidance is not in agreement on the exact track of an area of showers and thunderstorms.
This will likely be a thunderstorm complex. An MCS.
If an MCS does form, then it will likely track south southeast across portions of our region. I have the highest chances of precipitation extending from St Louis into Jefferson County, Illinois and then southeast into southeast Illinois and northwest Kentucky.
The big question is how south will thunderstorm chances extend. It is an unknown that will need to be monitored.
Hopefully, we get some rain. There are questions about whether areas south of the Ohio River in far western Kentucky, southeast Missouri, and northwest Tennessee will see much out of this thunderstorm complex. Warm temperatures aloft may kill it off. We will just have to wait and see. Fingers crossed for those who need rain.
If a complex of thunderstorms does form, then it could produce very heavy rain, damaging wind, and hail. Again, that would primarily be Thursday night over our northern and northeastern counties.
The front pushes southward Friday. That will mean thunderstorm chances will push southward, as well. Once again, it does not appear that we are looking at widespread thunderstorms. A few thunderstorms are possible.
Where storms form, they could produce torrential rain, frequent lightning, damaging wind, and hail.
The Storm Prediction Center has outlined the region for a risk of a few severe thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. The primary concern will be damaging wind and hail. Frequent lightning and very heavy rain will also occur.
There is obviously no shortage of moisture in the atmosphere. Where storms form, they could produce torrential downpours.
Above average temperatures will continue into next week. This is a long duration heat event.
It will be slightly less hot Friday and Saturday. Humidity levels will drop Friday into Sunday. It won’t be as oppressive. That is the only good news.
The heat and muggy air builds back next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Beyond next Wednesday, the heat may continue. Some of the guidance indicates that it will be hot all of next week.
EC model shows waves of heat in its entire forecast.
Here is the heat matrix. These are ensembles. Each row is one ensemble member. The model is ran over and over again with slightly different starting variables. The idea is the more of these numbers that match – the higher the confidence in the overall forecast.
The left side is the ensemble member number. The bottom row shows you the date. The numbers in the matrix are temperatures. If you see a row where all the numbers match (within a few degrees) then confidence in those temperature verifying is higher.
The GFS Model shows waves of heat throughout its run, as well.
July temperature and precipitation outlooks have been updated.
Use common sense heat safety rules.
Time to remember the heat safety rules. We don’t want anyone becoming sick from the heat.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
