Today through June 5th:   A few storms could be severe Wednesday.  The primary concern will be damaging wind and hail.  This is a low-end severe weather risk.  I am watching next week for additional thunderstorm chances.  It is too early to know if there will be a severe weather threat.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Wednesday into Thursday

Today is the first day of meteorological summer!  Meteorologists consider summer to be June, July, and August.

We are waking up to increasing clouds.  A few showers and thunderstorms have pushed into southeast Missouri and far southwest Illinois.

Here was the 7 AM radar.  You can see the weakening band of precipitation.  This was much stronger a few hours ago.

Clouds will continue to increase this morning.

The dying band of showers and thunderstorms will push further into the area.  This will leave what we call an outflow boundary in the region.

With a bit of daytime heating, the atmosphere will become unstable by this afternoon and evening.  That instability will help bubble up additional showers and thunderstorms.

A few of the thunderstorms could be locally severe with gusty wind and hail.  There is a risk of a couple of severe thunderstorms today.  Don’t expect a severe weather outbreak.  Just a low risk of a couple of damaging wind and hail reports.

There is a bit of spin in the atmosphere, as well.  I can’t completely rule out an isolated tornado threat.  Monitor updates.

Here is the Storm Prediction Center’s severe weather outlook.

There will be a lightning risk today.  Those with outdoor plans should monitor their Weather Observatory radars.

Shower and thunderstorm chances will continue into tonight.

The cold front will push through the region Thursday.

You can see the cold front on this morning’s surface map.

You can see the front is still west to us.

Then, Thursday the front will push across the region.  That will bring the end to our precipitation chances in the afternoon and evening.

.

Friday through Monday

Dry conditions are anticipated Friday through Saturday night.  No weather concerns.

Guidance indicates that the atmosphere will become unsettled Sunday into much of next week.  It appears that we will be in mostly zonal flow and perhaps some northwesterly flow.

The means west to east jet stream or northwesterly jet stream.   Typically, that means on and off shower and thunderstorm chances.

Thunderstorms that occur this time of the year can produce torrential downpours and frequent lightning.  You can also get gusty winds.

It is too early to know if a few of the storms could be severe with damaging wind and hail.

Let’s take a look at some cooler temperatures that are on the way.

Today’s high temperatures

Thursday’s high temperatures

Friday’s  high temperatures

Saturday’s high temperatures

Sunday’s high temperature forecast

Some tropical development will be possible over the coming days.  This will not impact our region.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
