Forecast Discussion
Today’s Average Regional Forecast Numbers
Temperatures will vary based on cloud cover and precipitation. Keep that in mind.
Weekend thunderstorm chances.
Good day, everyone.
We are waking up to a mix of sun and clouds.
There were a few early morning showers along the AR/MO and KY/TN border.
Satellite shows two large MCS’s well to our west, but those are part of weather changes coming this weekend.
MCS’s are thunderstorm complexes. These will move east southeast and bring increasing rain chances in our region late tonight into the weekend.
Dew points today will be tolerable. Dew point controls how muggy it feels.
Compared to tomorrow. Dew points tomorrow will be quite sticky.
Today will be mostly dry. A couple of thunderstorms may form over southeast Missouri and those could slip into southwest Illinois. Most counties, however, will simply remain dry today.
The upper level disturbance responsible for this morning’s MCS’s over the Midwest will slid eastward late tonight into tomorrow morning.
This will bring a rather complicated weekend forecast to the region.
The questions center around how much thunderstorm coverage will there be Saturday morning compared to Saturday afternoon and evening.
Some of the data shows one solid round of showers and thunderstorms Saturday morning. Then, a lull. Then, more intense storms form towards the mid and late afternoon hours and move east southeast into the overnight hours.
Other data shows one main round in the morning and then the atmosphere never fully recovers for a second afternoon round.
Both scenarios are equally plausible.
Remember. MCS/thunderstorm complexes are extremely difficult to forecast.
For now, I have a chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day into the evening hours on Saturday. Then, decreasing coverage Saturday night. Scattered coverage Sunday.
Locally heavy rain is likely with this system, but the majority of the region will receive 0.50″ to 1.00″. Keep in mind, as with every summer rain event, some locations will receive very little (even none) and other locations will receive several inches of rain. Luck of the draw and track of the MCS.
Here is the official WPC/NWS rainfall outlook. Again, take this as a general idea and not specifics.
There are some signals that the heaviest rain totals will be across far southeast Missouri and the Bootheel and then east along the Kentucky/Tennessee border.
The system will be pulling away from the region Sunday. That will leave us with at least a chance of scattered thunderstorms, but coverage likely won’t be as great as Saturday’s event. Northern counties may remain dry Sunday.
Somewhat better rain chances as you travel south Sunday.
The Storm Prediction Center has a level one risk of severe weather this afternoon and tonight over mainly southeast Missouri. They have another risk across the region Saturday. They clip our region with a risk Sunday.
Light green is sub-severe. Dark green is a level one (low) risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Their levels go up to five.
