Forecast Discussion

Today’s Average Regional Forecast Numbers

Temperatures will vary based on cloud cover and precipitation.  Keep that in mind.

Monitoring thunderstorm chances.

Kentucky broke their state 24 hour rainfall record.  The old record was from 1997.

I don’t recall such a widespread flash flood event in our area.  I have witnessed many flash flood events that were local.  This was a widespread 4 to 13 inches of rain.  Incredible amount of water.

That yellowish area represents 4 to 13 inches of rain!  The brighter yellow is 8 to 13 inches!  Just an incredible amount of rain in a short amount of time.  The lightning was prolific.  Many people said they have never witnessed such a dramatic display of continuous lightning.  It was non-stop for six+ hours.

Residents of the region are cleaning up from yet another historic weather event.  Sadly, Graves County, Kentucky was once again hit very hard.

Some of the same areas struck by the 2021 tornado witnessed their homes and businesses flooded.

Numerous counties in our region experienced severe flooding.  Many towns were flooded.  Hundreds of homes damaged.

We have another chance of showers and thunderstorms today.

Some of those thunderstorms could produce locally heavy rain, gusty wind, and small hail.  Lightning, of course.

It would only take 1/2″ to 1″ of rain to trigger some flash flooding.  We are not expecting a repeat of what happened yesterday, but some areas could have water issues.

If thunderstorms repeatedly train over the same area, then some heavier rain totals would be possible.  Monitor the watches and warnings.

A flood watch continues today for areas hit hard by yesterday’s flash flooding.

A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible this evening.  Then, the cold front will sag southward through most of the quad-state area.

A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible Friday over the southern half of the region.  That would include far southeast Missouri, extreme southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee.

If the front moves a tad faster then Friday will be dry.

Friday night into Sunday morning is expected to be less humid and dry.  Warm.

Another fast moving system may bring a couple of showers and thunderstorms to the region Sunday.

Warm and dry weather is likely Monday and Tuesday.

This outlook covers southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and far northwest Tennessee.

Today through April 18th:  A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail.  The tornado risk is low, but not zero.  Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk.  The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.

Today’s Storm Prediction Center’s Severe Weather Outlook

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
