Today through July 29th:  Severe storms are not anticipated.

.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Developing heat wave.
    2.   Use care if you must work outside this week.
    3.   Don’t forget the outdoor animals.  Change water bowls.

Weather advice:

Make sure you are using the Beau Dodson Weather Talk app and not text messages.  We can’t rely on Verizon and ATT to send out the text messages in a timely manner.  Thus, we made the app.  See links at the bottom of the page.

Forecast Discussion

Heavy rain fell across portions of the region over the past 24 hours.  Some locations received more than four inches of rain!  Many areas received 0.50″ to 1.50″.

Summer storms can produce torrential downpours in spots.

Here is what the Paducah, Kentucky, NWS Radar estimated for rain totals.  Illinois and Missouri were the big winners.

Double click the image to enlarge it.

Several severe thunderstorm warnings were issued last night, as well.  A couple of wind reports were received.  Mainly some tree limbs and power line damage.  Nothing major.

There was a severe micro-burst Sunday morning around 5:15 AM near LBL.  The downburst hit a marina near Kuttawa.  Damage was estimated in the 2 to 3 million dollar range.

I received radar and it was so small that you could barely see it on the radar.  It lasted for less than five minutes.  No warning was issued.

That happens sometimes with summer thunderstorms.  What goes up must come down.  When you have all of this heat and humidity it can produce a lot of atmospheric energy.

A heat wave is forecast Tuesday into next week.

The hottest days will be Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Wednesday will deliver 95 to 100 degree air temperatures with heat index values of 105 to 115 degrees.  Locally higher.

Dew points will be oppressive Wednesday.

A weak cold front will deliver slightly lower dew points Thursday.

Increasing humidity (dew point) levels will return Friday.  That will take us into the weekend.

Highs Friday into Monday will likely reach well into the 90s.  Heat index values above 100 degrees.   Not the best forecast.

Gusty winds are possible this week, as well.  This well help dry the soil (after today’s rain).

Drought conditions continue area-wide.  Some counties are worse than others.  Some have been lucky to receive beneficial rains over the past few weeks.

Today’s rain will help our cause.  For some, it is too late.  I have been receiving reports of some crops already being plowed under due to the ongoing drought.

Dew point is what controls how muggy it feels outside.

Here is the dew point forecast for the week ahead.  You can see surges of dew points of 70 degrees and above.  Muggy air.

Heat index values this week.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.

You can see my final forecast at the top of the page.
