An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day
- Major forecast bust on Sunday
- Tornado outbreak to our south and east
Sunday and Monday
Confidence: Medium
My apologies for a bad forecast on Sunday. I have been busy updating the office and helping with testing a new weather APP that we will be releasing soon. I should have spent more time on this system.
Probably one of the worst forecast busts in a year. I am glad this was not a winter storm. It would have been a major forecast headache.
We were supposed to have widespread showers and some thunderstorms on Sunday. Many areas experienced quite a bit of sunshine. There was a band of showers on Sunday morning that moved northward through the region.
By early afternoon some ares were completely clear! Check out this satellite image.
The white represents clouds. The black areas are sun. Look at all the sun over portions of Kentucky.
Unfortunately, our sunshine came at a high price.
The area of low pressure, that was forecast to track through Kentucky, ended up well to the south and east. This is one reason there was a high risk for severe storms and tornadoes over portions of the southeast United States.
Here is where the low was forecast to track (see the red L) 991 millibar low over Kentucy.
Look at where the low tracked. See the closed 986 millibar on the AL/GA State line? That is the low. WELL south and east of us.
This robbed us of moisture.
Rain was developing, as of this writing, over portions of the region. The deformation precipitation band. Normall, during the month of January, this would be snow. Not this year.
Monday will deliver breezy conditions during the morning. Cooler, as well. Some clouds.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not update then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.
During the winter months you can track snow and ice by clicking the winterize button on the local city view interactive radars.
If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

If you click on the image below you can read the Kentucky House of Representatives Resolution.
I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and this blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on some television stations or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
Many of the graphics on this page are from www.weatherbell.com
WeatherBell is a great resource for weather model guidance.
You can sign up for my AWARE email by clicking here I typically send out AWARE emails before severe weather, winter storms, or other active weather situations. I do not email watches or warnings. The emails are a basic “heads up” concerning incoming weather conditions
