An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day
- Winter is on vacation
- Multiple rain chances over the coming seven days
- A few heavy downpours possible
- Storms?
Wednesday Night through Thursday
Confidence: HIGH
Unsettled weather is going to stick around awhile.
Showers and some thunderstorms will spread out of Arkansas later this evening and into the overnight hours.Precipitation will become widespread late tonight into tomorrow morning. Some heavy downpours are possible.
The flash flooding concern is not zero. Some areas do have standing water. The ground is saturated. If this was a heavier rain event then I would be more concerned.Medium concerns of some overland flooding.
The NWS has decided not to issue a flash flood watch. Monitor updates.
The risk for severe weather with this event is low.
Rainfall totals of 0.40″ to 0.80″ will be common with pockets of 1.5″. As always, locally heavier rain totals can occur if thunderstorms develop.
Temperatures will remain WELL above normal through the weekend.
Thursday night through Friday night
Confidence: HIGH
Showers and thunderstorms are possible early in the evening. Precipitation will taper as the nights wears on. The greatest coverage of precipitation on Thursday evening will be east of the Mississippi River.
Again, severe weather is not anticipated.
Temperatures will remain above normal on Thursday night into Friday night. Well above normal, for that matter. Strange pattern.
Gusty winds are possible.
Saturday into Sunday night
Confidence: Medium
Yet another storm system will approach our region over the weekend. I did include at least scattered showers on Saturday.
Showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage Saturday night into Sunday night. Locally heavy rain is a possibility. I will monitor the flood risk.
Severe weather is not anticipated, but monitor updates.
Rainfall totals over the weekend might exceed 0.50″. Temperatures will also remain above normal.
Monday
Confidence: Low
Monday might end up dry. The storm system over the weekend should be pulling away from the area on Sunday night. I left rain chances out of the forecast for Monday. I will monitor trends in the guidance.

WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK was updated on Monday, January 16th. The next update will be this coming weekend
Winter weather outlooks will be posted on the www.weathertalk.com website. Look under the Winter Weather Outlook tab. These are updated at least twice each week.

High and Low-Temperature Outlook
Thursday morning low temperatures
Thursday afternoon high temperatures
Friday morning low temperatures
Friday afternoon high temperatures
I have updated the winds and rainfall chances into the weekend.
The main concern will be some locally heavy downpours. The ground is saturated. We don’t need more rain. At this time, flash flooding appears unlikely. Let’s keep an eye on rainfall totals over the next seven days.
Severe thunderstorm outlook.
Remember that a severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that produces 58 mph winds or higher, quarter size hail or larger, and/or a tornado.
Wednesday night into Friday night: Severe weather is not anticipated. Lightning possible.
Saturday into Sunday night: Some storms are possible. At this time, severe weather appears unlikely. Monitor updates.
We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not update then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.
During the winter months you can track snow and ice by clicking the winterize button on the local city view interactive radars.

There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and this blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on some television stations or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events

WeatherBell is a great resource for weather model guidance.
You can sign up for my AWARE email by clicking here I typically send out AWARE emails before severe weather, winter storms, or other active weather situations. I do not email watches or warnings. The emails are a basic “heads up” concerning incoming weather conditions
