An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day
- Rain
- Spring? Apparently.
Forecast Analysis
Saturday night into Tuesday
Confidence: High
Clouds and some fog will be with us tonight into Sunday. Patchy dense fog possible. For that matter, fog is possible over the coming days. Keep that in mind.
Showers are possible tonight into Sunday. There could be a period or two of widespread rain.
Warming trend over the coming days. Many of you will wonder if winter is over.
NAM precipitation map for 2 pm on Sunday. Some rain in our region. Ice to our north. Major ice storm for Kansas and Oklahoma. Perhaps a 2009 event out there. Bad for them. Thankfully, we will not be dealing with any more ice. Just the opposite. We may have storms this week.
This next map is for 6 am on Monday. Green is rain. Yellow is moderate rain. Pink is ice. Blue is snow.
Spotty showers in our region Sunday night and Monday. No ice.
This next map is for 2 pm on Monday. Again, some spotty showers possible.
This next map is for 6 pm on Monday. Increasing coverage of rain and possible thunderstorms.
This next map is for 3 am on Tuesday morning. Rain! Perhaps widespread rain. Some moderate rain possible. Lightning possible.
We should dry out on Wednesday. Some guidance indicates a few spotty showers. I will monitor that part of the forecast.
Another rain event next weekend. Go figure. No snow. No snow in the guidance, at all. Keep checking back (snow bunnies)
Let’s take a look at the different models. We are looking at rain totals for the coming days.
Keep in mind this is Saturday afternoon through Tuesday night. This does include today’s rain.
Locally heavier totals likely over the coming days.
This first graphic is the higher resolution NAM. You can see some 2″+ totals in our local area.
This next graphic is the GFS model guidance.

This next graphic is from the GEM guidance.
You can see some differences in the different models. Bottom line is that wet weather will be with us for several days.
I will be monitoring the thunderstorm chances on Monday and Tuesday. At this time, it appears the severe weather risk will remain to our south. This will, however have to be monitored.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not seem to be updating then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.
If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

We also have a new national interactive radar – you can view that radar by clicking here.

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s. I have 38 years of experience in observing our region’s weather patterns.
I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Geosciences with a concentration in Broadcast Meteorology. I graduated from Mississippi State University.
My resume includes the following:
Member of the American Meteorological Society.
NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.
I am the owner and operator of Weather Talk (in partnership with The Fire Horn)
I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.
Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross.
I am a recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross. In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award. I was recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.
I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple…
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, and the blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
Many of my graphics are from www.weatherbell.com – a great resource for weather data, model data, and more
You can sign up for my AWARE email by clicking here I typically send out AWARE emails before severe weather, winter storms, or other active weather situations. I do not email watches or warnings. The emails are a basic “heads up” concerning incoming weather conditions.
