Seven-day forecast for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.
This is a BLEND for the region. Scroll down to see the region by region forecast.
THE FORECAST IS GOING TO VARY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION. Scroll down to see the region by region forecast.
1. The primary concern remains the cold weather.
Prepare for bitterly cold air this weekend into next week. Multiple days below freezing. Some nights in the single digits and teens. Pipe busting weather.
2. Snow showers possible Friday night with rapidly falling temperatures. Flash freeze likely. Watch for black ice if the wind does not dry the roads. Snow flurries or snow showers possible Saturday into Tuesday.
3. Possible snow event Sunday afternoon/night into Monday. Confidence in snow accumulation is questionable. Data is mixed and this event could miss us to the south. Monitor updates. Highest chance of snow accumulation continues to be across northern Arkansas into the Missouri Bootheel and along and south of the Kentucky/Tennessee border.
Avoid extension cords with space heaters. Every year our region experiences house fires because of this.

Friday to Friday
1. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. Lightning is possible today.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Low risk. A few of today’s thunderstorms could produce hail and high wind. There is a small chance of a short lived tornado. Mainly from the Missouri Bootheel into extreme southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee.
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Possible. A few areas may see low land flooding Friday. Creeks may rise. Locally heavy rain. Some ditches may flood which would lead to road flooding. Avoid flooded roadways.
4. Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees? No.
5. Will the wind chill dip below 10 degrees? Yes. Friday night into next Wednesday.
6. Is measurable snow and/or sleet in the forecast? Yes. Light snow accumulation is possible Friday afternoon and night. This could lead to icy roads. A flash freeze is possible. Accumulation of snow would be light, but since it will be so cold it would not take much to cause issues. Not overly concerned, but I would monitor radars and temperatures.
Snow is possible Sunday afternoon/evening into Tuesday. I will need to fine tune the exact time of the snows arrival. The chances for snow will be higher across the southern half of the region vs the north. Less snow north. More snow south. There is a risk that this system misses us to the south. I will know more tonight and tomorrow. Trends continue to be south southeast (meaning the system continues to push farther south). Monitor updates.
7. Is freezing rain/ice in the forecast? Freezing rain is unlikely.
Freezing rain is rain that falls and instantly freezes on objects such as trees and power lines
.
Fire weather risk level.
There will be an increased house fire risk this weekend into next week. This is because of cold temperatures.
Friday: 3. Very low risk.
Friday night: 3. Very low risk.
Saturday: 5. Medium risk.
Saturday night. 5. Medium risk.
Fire Weather Discussion
Strong winds are expected to develop as rain tapers off this morning. Many sites will have peak wind gusts today of 40-50 mph with some locations approaching 60 mph. With cold air behind the system, a brief switchover to light snow is possible tomorrow afternoon. Dry and cold conditions are expected Saturday, with Arctic air moving in Saturday night through early next week. Snow enters the forecast Sunday through Monday with accumulations possible.
A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

Confidence in the forecast? High Confidence
Friday Forecast: High winds. Cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms likely. Turning colder as the front pushes across the region. Rain may change to light snow showers late in the day. Some thunderstorms could produce strong winds. Locally heavy rain could cause low land flooding and sharp rises on streams.

- Showers and thunderstorms today. Watch for flooded roadways.
- A few of today’s thunderstorms could be severe with hail and high wind. Low risk, overall.
- Gusty winds today into next Tuesday. Today’s winds could gust above 50 mph.
- Much colder Friday evening into next week. Falling temperatures Friday PM behind the arctic cold front.
- Snow showers possible Friday afternoon and night. Watch for slick spots as temps rapidly fall. Flash freeze possible. Low chance of accumulating snow.
- Bitterly cold air this weekend into much of next week. Pipe busting cold.
- Tracking a potential snow event Sunday afternoon into Tuesday. I continue to monitor trends on this system. The main question is how far south does this event track. Too far south and it misses us.
- Monitoring another system Thursday.
Weather advice:
Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.
Prepare for pipe busting cold weather. That will arrive this weekend into next week.
Accumulating snow appears possible Sunday PM into Tuesday. Confidence in the details is not increasing. I am still concerned about how far south the system is tracking. If it tracks much farther south then we will have little or no snow accumulation. Monitor updates. I will know more tonight.
Forecast Discussion
Good day, everyone.
I am tracking multiple weather concerns. As mentioned above.
Not a lot has changed over the past 24 hours. Confidence in the snow event is not increasing. At least not, yet. The cold air is a lock. It is coming. With or without snow.
Gusty winds are likely today and tonight. Winds may gust above 50 mph later today. This will be in response to the deep area of low pressure moving to our north.
Double click images to enlarge them.
Gradient winds (non-thunderstorm winds) could top 50 mph. This could cause damage to trees and power lines.
In addition to the above, A few of today’s storms could produce gusty wind and hail. Some of the storms could tap into the strong winds aloft and bring them down to the surface. There is a level one risk of a severe thunderstorm warning. The concern would be damaging wind gusts. We expect the tornado risk to remain to our south.
This is a low-end setup for severe weather. Dew points are low. Temperatures are cool. If we had higher temperatures and higher dew points, then I would be more concerned.
We have big weather changes ahead. Bitterly cold air is on the way.
What is coming is a prolonged period of cold to bitterly cold temperatures. There will be some nights with wind chill values of -10 to -20. Brrr and double Brrr. That is dangerously cold. Exposed skin can have frostbite in a matter of minutes. Let’s be careful.
The Paducah, Kentucky NWS posted this. This sums up the extreme cold event.
Multiple days of cold weather. For some areas it has been 25 to 30 years since we have experienced the number of hours below freezing that is being forecast. Unusual event.
A few snow showers are possible this afternoon and tonight. Little or no accumulation. Gusty winds will accompany snow showers.
There could be black ice Friday night if we do have snow showers. The wind should be strong enough to dry the pavement from Friday’s rain. With that said, temperatures will fall fast Friday night.
A flash freeze occurs when temperatures rapidly fall and moisture remains on roadways and parking lots.
Again, gusty winds should help dry the roadways. Thus, impacts will be limited.
Check out these temperatures. Brrr and double brrr.
Saturday morning lows
Sunday morning lows
Monday morning lows
Tuesday morning lows
Wednesday low temperatures
This cold weather will be harsh on outdoor animals and livestock.
Wind chills will dip below ten degrees Friday night. Low wind chill values will be the theme Friday night into much of next week. Occasionally, those wind chill values will dip well below zero.
The NWS may need to issue a wind chill advisory or warning. Either way, it will be bitterly cold.
Snow chances?
I am keeping an eye on the arctic front Saturday. Perhaps a few snow showers along it during the afternoon and evening.
The snow system continues to trend south and east. This has been my primary concern over the past week. Just how far south southeast will this event trend.
My going forecast has been for the highest chance of snow to be from northern Arkansas into the Missouri Bootheel and then along and south of the Kentucky/Tennessee border.
That is where there is a chance for accumulating snow. Areas to the north are more uncertain. Certainly as you move farther and farther north the chances decrease. Zero to an inch.
There is a chance of one to four inches of snow from northern Arkansas into the Bootheel and then along the Kentucky/Tennessee border southward.
There is a chance this system misses my forecast counties to the south and east.
Double click image to enlarge it.
Cold dry air pushing in from the north could shunt it so far south and east that we end up with flurries or very little snow.
I always tell people an accurate snow forecast can be made 24 to 48 hours in advance. We will not be in the range until tonight. Friday night.
Thus, confidence won’t increase until then.
I am watching additional snow chances Thursday.
Since it will be so cold, this will be a dry snow.
Whatever does fall is not going anywhere. It will be bitterly cold next week. If we have a snowpack then temperatures could dip into the single digits with wind chill values below zero a good bet.
Now is the time to prepare for bitterly cold air. This is pipe freezing/busting weather.
