Fire Weather Discussion
A second round of precipitation moves in for this evening through Friday with a rain to snow transition. Temperatures will remain warm enough to limit the light snow accumulations to grassy and elevated surfaces. Winds become southwesterly with some warming and dry weather for the weekend. A wind shift to northwesterly is projected to occur Sunday evening, resulting in somewhat cooler conditions for the start of next week.
A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

- Rain and snow showers Friday/Friday evening.
- Some light accumulation possible on mainly grassy and elevated surfaces.
- Dry conditions Saturday through Tuesday night.
Weather advice:
Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.
Forecast Discussion
A mixture of rain and snow will continue into Friday evening. Some light slushy accumulation will be possible. Overall, we don’t expect much. A few spots may end up with a solid dusting to an inch or so.
Watch bridges and overpasses. They freeze first. The concern would be early this morning (Friday morning). Temperatures will quickly rise above freezing as we move through the day. Highs in the upper 30s are likely.
Rain and snow showers will end tonight.
Dry conditions Saturday through Tuesday night. No weather concerns other than some patchy dense fog Saturday night. Use care. Watch bridges in case moisture freezes on them (from the fog). We call that freezing fog.
I am watching a light precipitation event Wednesday. For now, I kept rain chances low (10% to 20%).
I continue to watch January. First off, our winter forecast was the bulk of winter to arrive in late January into February.
We called for a top three warmest Decembers. For the nation as a whole. We are at number one. It has been a very mild December.
The models were showing a couple of systems between January 1st and 7th. They have since lost those or weakened them.
Now they are showing larger systems between January 7th and 14th. Needless to say, confidence in any outcome remains very low. Models don’t do well in the long range.
I do believe we will have some systems to deal with between the 7th and 14th. One of those may end up being a bit stronger than the other.
Then, I am watching January 20th to the 31st. I am watching for colder air shots mid to late January.
Snow fans, don’t give up, yet! We still have quite a bit of winter to go. Those who don’t love snow…well you can continue to enjoy our snow drought.
