Today through December 31st:  I am monitoring next Tuesday night into Wednesday night.

.

Today’s outlook (below).

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map.  Just ignore that.

The black outline is our local area.

Weather advice:

Updated December 20th through December 31st.

Bitterly cold air Thursday into Friday.  Overnight lows in the teens.  Wind chill values of 5 to 20 above.

I am watching next Tuesday night into Wednesday night for another storm system.  I can’t rule out thunderstorms.

Weather Discussion

    1.   Rain ending.  Much colder.
    2.   Brrr Thursday and Friday.
    3.   Another chance of rain Sunday/Sunday night.

The main weather story is the cold front that is pushing across the area this afternoon and tonight.

We enjoyed 50s Monday and Tuesday.  That was ahead of the cold front.  Today, as well.

Those temperatures are about to disappear.

Much colder air will sweep in behind the front.  Strong and gusty winds will continue into tomorrow, as well.

Occasionally, winds will gust above 30 mph.  When you combine this with cold temperatures you will end up with wind chill values of 5 above to 20 above late tonight into Friday.

A sharp contrast to our recent above normal temperatures.

The rain will end west to east tonight.  The rain may end as a wet snow mix.  Accumulation of snow is unlikely.  I can’t rule out a few locations in southeast Illinois and western Kentucky picking up a dusting or so.

Most of the guidance shows little or no snow.

The cold air is just now quite fast enough to catch up with the moisture.

Typically, for a winter storm, we need a secondary wave/area of low pressure.  That helps create precipitation in the colder air.

This system will spread heavy snow well to our northeast.  Again.  They just had a heavy snow event last week.

Colder air filters into the region Thursday and Friday with highs in the upper 20s to middle 30s.  Colder wind chill values, as mentioned above.

A few flurries are possible Thursday and perhaps even Friday.

Dry weather Saturday and Saturday night.

Another system will develop by Sunday and Sunday night.  This will bring an increase in clouds, gusty wind, and some scattered showers.

It should be warm enough for mostly rain.  I did mention a rain or rain/snow mix Sunday night.  No accumulation.

I am watching a larger system towards next Tuesday night into Wednesday night.  That one may bring thunderstorms.  Still early and plenty of time to monitor it.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models.  Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather.  All models are wrong.  Some are more wrong than others.  Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.

I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation.  If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
