Fire Weather Discussion
Drier weather (minRHs ~40) will continue through Friday morning, after which a bout of sporadic wetting rain is forecast to produce up to .2″ accumulation in some areas through Saturday. Moving into Sunday and Monday more rain is possible, especially on Monday where more widespread precipitation is possible. Additionally, poor smoke dispersion is a concern moving into the weekend as mixing heights and transport wind will steadily decrease.
A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

- Warming trend into Christmas.
- Quiet weather today and Thursday.
- Rain chances Thursday night into at least Christmas.
- Watching active storm pattern week of Christmas and following week.
Weather advice:
Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.
.Forecast Discussion
Catch me on WMOK radio this Friday. I will be discussing the Christmas forecast and what comes next.
I will have a special guest with me!
No weather concerns today through Thursday afternoon. Quiet weather. A slow warming trend begins today. As a matter of fact, by this weekend we may hit the 60 degree mark. Just in time for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Go figure.
December has been very mild. Let’s look at the latest anomaly map. This shows you how many degrees above average temperatures have been. WELL above average. This could be a top 5 warmest December’s for the nation. Time will tell.
Now look at last December. What a flip. Completely opposite of this year. Last year was a La Nina winter. This year is an El Nino winter.
Remember, last December we had that brutal arctic blast of cold air. Temperatures fell below zero with snow and ice. Wind chill values dipped into the 0 to -30 range. Brrr.
Here is what is being forecast for high temperatures Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Quite mild for this time of the year. Normally, we would expect highs around 49 degrees.
Saturday’s high temperatures
Christmas Eve highs
Christmas Day highs
I have low end rain shower chances in the forecast Thursday night through Saturday night. It is possible that quite a bit of this time remains dry or mostly dry.
This will be light rain Thursday night into Saturday night. I do have Saturday with the lowest rain chances 0% to 20%.
Rain totals Thursday night through Saturday night will likely range from 0.00″ to 0.20″. Not much. The higher rain totals will arrive Sunday and Monday.
Rain chances ramp up Sunday and Sunday night. That will continue into Monday night. I can’t rule out a rumble of thunder. For now, the risk of severe weather appears low. I am watching it. There isn’t a lot of CAPE to work with. CAPE is basically energy that thunderstorm tap into. Dew points also won’t be all that high. I typically look for 58 degrees and above when it comes to dew points and forecasting severe thunderstorms.
I am expecting dew points, with the Sunday/Monday system, to range from 50 to 56 degrees. I will keep an eye on it, as always.
Rain totals with the Sunday into Monday night system will likely range from 0.50″ to 1.00″. I have been burned a few times on recent rain events. The forecast was too high (for most) when it came to the rain totals portion of the forecast. That could be because of the ongoing drought. Or, just bad forecasting on my part.
Either way, it does appear that Sunday into Monday night will deliver the highest chances for widespread showers and thunderstorms.
Some of the data keeps chances below 40% during the day Sunday. Other data is a bit higher than that. Peak chances appear to be Sunday night into Monday night.

I am watching several systems between December 26th and January 3rd. Could one of those bring snow or a wintry mix to the region? It is possible, but confidence this far out remains low. This is the time-period I have been saying for two months to watch.
Around and after Christmas. To watch for an active pattern and for a cold shot of air. Let’s see how everything trends over the coming days.
If you want to receive the daily forecast, then log into your www.weathertalk.com account and turn on NUMBER 3. I usually send out the hand-typed forecast between noon and 4 pm each day. In addition to the daily forecast you will receive an extended outlook, fire weather forecast, and more.
