Fire Weather Discussion
Mostly clear skies with dry air, and light southerly winds are expected today with high pressure overhead slowly moving to the east. Low mixing heights due to a residual inversion and light winds will lead to poor smoke dispersion. By mid week, temperatures begin to moderate, and a chance of rain returns to the forecast by weeks end.
A Haines Index of 6 means a high potential for an existing fire to become large or exhibit erratic fire behavior, 5 means medium potential, 4 means low potential, and anything less than 4 means very low potential.

- Cold today.
- Quiet weather Wednesday and Thursday.
- Rain chances Thursday night into Christmas.
- Watching active storm pattern week of Christmas and following week.
Weather advice:
Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.
.Forecast Discussion
Catch me on WMOK radio this Friday. I will be discussing the Christmas forecast and what comes next.
If you want to receive the daily forecast, then log into your www.weathertalk.com account and turn on NUMBER 3. I usually send out the hand-typed forecast between noon and 4 pm each day. In addition to the daily forecast you will receive an extended outlook, fire weather forecast, and more.
Today will be the coldest day of the week. Yesterday and today. A bundle up morning, for sure.
Check out these temperatures. They may fall a couple more degrees before the sun starts to warm us up, a little bit.
Brrrr!
No weather concerns today through Thursday afternoon. Quiet weather. A slow warming trend begins tonight and tomorrow.
I have rain showers in the forecast Thursday night through Christmas. The difficult part of the forecast is trying to figure out what % number to put on those rain chances.
I mostly have 30% chances, for now. There will be time periods where I may need to bump those numbers up.
The probabilities will likely be higher Sunday and Monday. I have 40% to 60% chances Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I may bump that up to 70% as confidence increases.
For now, I kept thunderstorms out of the forecast, but that could change depending on the path of the area of low pressure and its strength.
The K-index is popping Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This could mean lightning.
We may hit 60 degrees or near 60 degrees Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Temperatures Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be well above seasonal averages. Average highs for this time of the year are around 49 degrees. Average lows are around 29 degrees.
Here is the national temperature anomaly forecast for December 25th. Look at all that mild air!
What about rain totals?
I have not been happy about the last few events when it comes to the rain totals forecast. For the most part, we have been overshooting. In other words, forecasting too high of totals. They have ended up lower. Not for everyone, but for many.
Let’s see how this trends.
These are the seven day rainfall totals forecast from the WPC and different models.

I am watching several systems between December 26th and January 3rd. Could one of those bring snow or a wintry mix to the region? It is possible, but confidence this far out remains low. This is the time-period I have been saying for two months to watch.
Around and after Christmas. To watch for an active pattern and for a cold shot of air. Let’s see how everything trends over the coming days.
Let’s take a look into the rest of winter and spring. Our long range outlooks have been batting about 70 to 80% accuracy.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

What am I looking at?
You are looking at computer model data. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather.
