I have updated the winter storm forecast. I update the winter storm outlook twice per week. It is updated more frequently during inclement weather. There was quite a bit to talk about today. See the graphic further down in the blog. It has the instructions on how to view the outlook. Remember, the password is NOT the same password you use to sign into your Weather Talk account. Weather:
Tornadoes raked across the southlands on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Several lives were lost.
Here is the storm reports map. The red dots are tornadoes. Overnight tornadoes are particularly dangerous. It is not unusual to have tornado outbreaks during the fall and winter months.

A quiet weather pattern for Wednesday night into Saturday morning. Temperatures will be near normal. Light winds. Dry through the period.
A new storm system will approach our region Saturday afternoon into Sunday afternoon. The track of this system is still in question. How fast moisture spreads into our region, on Saturday and Saturday night, will impact what type of precipitation falls. It is possible that some wintry mix could occur at the onset of the system.
At this time, no snow or ice accumulation is anticipated. Perhaps some novelty wet snowflakes mixed in on Saturday night.
Temperatures are forecast to warm a bit on Sunday. That means whatever precipitation falls would be in the form of rain. As always, monitor updates. The system is still several days away.
Unsettled weather is on tap for next week. Models are keying in on a potential significant system on Monday afternoon into Monday night and then again towards December 7th through the 9th. Way too early for details, but the model guidance has been picking up on this system for some time now. This leads me to believe that we need to monitor it closely. I will go into more detail in the winter weather outlook.
November was certainly warm. Let’s take a look at the temperature and rainfall anomalies. Thankfully, over the past two weeks, we have been receiving rain at regular intervals. Portions of the region are still in moderate to severe drought. Some of that has been offset by recent rains.
We are still in drought, but we are better off than we were a couple of weeks ago.
Just look at how much of the country is covered by above normal temperatures. I will be curious to see if November places in the top 5 mildest on record. Records go back to the 1880’s.
Precipitation, month to date departures. How much above or below normal was precipitation?
Thankfully, over the past couple of weeks, we have started to receive regular rainfall. We were still below normal, for the most part. It could have been worse.
WINTER STORM UPDATE:
UPDATED TODAY! Wednesday, November 30th
I have updated the winter storm outlook. The third of the season. The winter storm outlook will be posted twice a week.
You can view the forecast by following these instructions. Remember, the winter storm outlook is behind the paywall. It is $3 a month. A typical months worth of expenses is $700.00 or more. This helps offset the costs.
The next winter storm update will be posted on Monday, December 5th. Posts are made more frequently when necessary (when winter weather is forecast).

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not seem to be updating then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.
If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?
I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s. I have 38 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Geo-sciences with a concentration in Broadcast Meteorology. I graduated from Mississippi State University.
My resume includes:
Member of the American Meteorological Society.
NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.
Meteorologist for McCracken County Rescue Squad. I served from 2005 through 2015
Meteorologist for the McCracken County Rescue Squad 2015-current
I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.
Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross.
In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.
Recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.
I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
There is a lot of noise on the internet. A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation. Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.
My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.
- Communicate in simple terms
- To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
- Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
