1. Is lightning in the forecast? Yes. Lightning is possible today into at least next Tuesday.
2. Are severe thunderstorms in the forecast? Yes. The remnants of Laura will move into our region today. Tornadoes will be possible in the right front quadrant of Laura. That appears to include our area. The greatest concern would be Friday into Friday evening. The system pulls away on Saturday. Hurricanes can produce short-lived tornadoes. They are extremely difficult to issue tornado warnings on because they normally last one or two radar sweeps. A few minutes. In addition to short-lived tornadoes, strong and gusty wind will accompany the remnants of Laura.
A few storms could be severe Saturday and Sunday. Mainly over southeast Missouri and northwest Tennessee.
* The NWS officially defines a severe thunderstorm as a storm with 58 mph wind or greater, 1″ hail or larger, and/or tornadoes
3. Is flash flooding in the forecast? Yes. Flash flooding will be possible. Slow moving thunderstorms today into the weekend could drop an inch of rain in less than 20 minutes. If thunderstorms repeatedly occur over the same area then flash flooding will be an issue. The remnants of Laura will move across the region Friday into Friday night/Saturday. This will produce locally heavy rain totals in excess of three inches. Avoid flooded roadways.
4. Will there be a chance of a frost or freeze? No.
5. Will the heat index exceed 100 degrees? No.

Today’s outlook (below).
Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.
Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.
One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.
A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.
The tan states are simply a region that SPC outlined on this particular map. Just ignore that.

Weather Discussion
-
- Unsettled weather.
- Remnants of Laura today and tonight.
- Scattered showers/storms into next week.
.
The live severe weather blog has been activated.

Friday into Saturday:
We had several severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings last night. That was because of the remnants of Laura pushing into the area.
Wind damage was reported in Graves, Calloway, and Marshall Counties. There was likely some wind damage in northwest Tennessee, as well.
Tornado warnings were issued for the Missouri Bootheel. Still waiting to hear if there was any damage down there.
The remnants of Hurricane Laura will push directly across our region Friday into Friday night/Saturday.
There will be several items of interest with this system.
Strong and gusty wind is likely with Laura. You can expect occasional wind gusts above 30 mph Friday/Friday night. Gusty wind on Saturday morning, as well.
Any convection could bring winds of 40+ mph. Gusty, at times.
Thunderstorms or heavier showers will be able to bring stronger winds down to the surface.
At this time, it appears rain totals of 0.50″ to 2.50″ of rain across the region. That includes what fell last night. Locally higher totals are possible.
The good news is that Laura is moving along at a nice clip.
.
At this time, we have the heaviest rain falling across far southeast Missouri, extreme southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and northwest Tennessee.
Again, there can always be higher totals during tropical weather events. If convection were to train over the same area for an extended period of time then rain totals would rise.
.
The WPC/NOAA has issues a marginal and sight risk of excessive rainfall today and tonight.
.
A marginal risk Saturday for portions of southeast Missouri.
.
And then a marginal and slight risk Sunday for portions of the region.
.
In addition to the above, dying tropical systems can produce short-lived tornadoes.
Tornadoes normally occur in the right front quadrant of hurricanes and the remnants of tropical storms/hurricanes.
We will be in the right front quadrant.
.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed our region in a level one and two risk today and this evening. The yellow area is the level two risk. Two is a higher risk than one.
Tornado risk zone.
.
These tornadoes are extremely difficult to issue tornado warnings on. They can occur without lightning and thunder.
They typically last a few seconds to a few minutes. One or two radar sweeps.
It is not uncommon for our region to experience tornadoes from dying tropical systems. Be alert Friday/Friday night and perhaps Saturday morning.
I will be sending out messages via my Weather Talk app.
.
Saturday into Wednesday:
An unsettled pattern will develop over the weekend into next week.
At this time, I have at least low-end chances of showers and thunderstorms each day. Some days with a higher chance than other days.
See the detailed information at the top of the page.
I suspect, as we get closer to each 12-hour time period, that the forecast will need adjustments.
That would happen as I get a better handle on each impulse that will move across the region.
Locally heavy rain will be possible with thunderstorms. Gusty wind, as well.
For now, there is not a strong signal for severe weather. I can’t rule out that changing. I will be monitoring.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.
What should I take from these?
- The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
- The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.
.
What am I looking at?
You are looking at different models. Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather. All models are wrong. Some are more wrong than others. Meteorologists have to make a forecast based on the guidance/models.
I show you these so you can see what the different models are showing as far as precipitation. If most of the models agree, then the confidence in the final weather forecast increases.
