Weather advice:

Make sure you have three to five ways of receiving your severe weather information.

Forecast Discussion

Well, our significant heat wave is about over.

Yesterday, Chicago hit 100 degrees for the first time since 1995.  They also recorded their highest heat index ever.

That is out of my region, but I just wanted to throw that out there!  It is hot.

Heat index values, in our local area, reached 105 to 120 degrees over the past few days.  Today will be no different.

The heat advisory continues.  Use care.

A couple of showers and thunderstorms will pop up on radar today into tomorrow.  Storms could produce brief downpours, gusty wind, small hail, and lightning.

Most of the region should remain dry.  A few spots will receive some relief.  At least while it is raining.

The cold front will advance across the region today and tomorrow.  Depending on how fast the front moves, will determine temperatures Saturday and Saturday evening.

If the front lingers or slows, then it will still be hot tomorrow.  That is possible, especially across our southern counties.

Keep that in mind.

By Sunday, the entire region will be north of the cold front.  A better air-mass will settle into the region.  Cooler and less muggy.   Lower dew points!

There is a tiny chance of showers Sunday through Tuesday.  Most of the region will remain dry.

There is still  a considerable amount of moisture in the ground.  The July and August heavy rain events soaked the region.  That is the good news.

However, the top soil may begin to dry quickly.   That will need monitoring.

For now, the ground has moisture and we are not returning to drought conditions.  Not yet, at least.

I will become increasingly concerned about that subject if the rains don’t return in another week or two.

The September forecast has been drier than average.  Then, October and November are forecast to deliver above average precipitation.

Okay, stay cool out there today!  Relief is on the way.  I promise!

This outlook covers southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and far northwest Tennessee.

Today through April 18th:  A couple of the Saturday afternoon and night thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and hail.  The tornado risk is low, but not zero.  Mainly over Missouri for the tornado risk.  The line will weaken with time as it moves farther east.

.

Today’s Storm Prediction Center’s Severe Weather Outlook

Light green is where thunderstorms may occur but should be below severe levels.

Dark green is a level one risk. Yellow is a level two risk. Orange is a level three (enhanced) risk. Red is a level four (moderate) risk. Pink is a level five (high) risk.

One is the lowest risk. Five is the highest risk.

A severe storm is one that produces 58 mph wind or higher, quarter size hail, and/or a tornado.

Again, as a reminder, these are models. They are never 100% accurate. Take the general idea from them.

What should I take from these?

  1. The general idea and not specifics. Models usually do well with the generalities.
  2. The time-stamp is located in the upper left corner.

.

What am I looking at?

You are looking at computer model data.  Meteorologists use many different models to forecast the weather.

Occasionally, these maps are in Zulu time.  12z=7 AM.  18z=1 PM.  00z=7 PM. 06z=1 AM

Green represents light rain.  Dark green represents moderate rain.  Yellow and orange represent heavier rain.
